Love & Romance, Hollywood Style [Period 4, Class 1]

Drake walked into class with his own personal soundtrack, bopping his head to the music. "What is love?" he said, addressing the class when the music ended. "That's a good question. Love is a many splendored thing¹. Love bites, love bleeds, it's bringin' me to my knees². Love stinks³. In the dead of night, love bites⁴. Love is like oxygen: you get too much, you get too high, not enough and you're gonna die⁵. Love is friendship set on fire⁶. Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness⁷. Love is hard to get, impossible to hold, straight and narrow, like a burning fuse⁸. Love hurts, love scars, love wounds and mars any heart⁹. Love is like war: easy to begin but hard to end⁶. Love is like quicksilver in the hand. Leave the fingers open and it stays. Clutch it, and it darts away¹⁰. Love is the irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired¹¹. Love is a state of grace, transcending time and space¹². Love doesn't make the world go 'round; love is what makes the ride worthwhile¹³. Love is a promise, love is a souvenir, once given never forgotten, never let it disappear¹⁴. Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend¹⁵. Love is a condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own¹⁶. Light of the world, shine on me, love is the answer¹⁷. Love is like a snowmobile flying over the frozen tundra that suddenly flips, pinning you underneath. At night the ice weasels come¹⁸."

Drake settled on the edge of his desk. "Love comes in all shapes and sizes, and in this class, we're going to look at some types of love that Hollywood is awfully fond of. There's obsessive love, tragic love, vengeful love, unrequited love, courtly love, destructive love, tough love, the love that dare not speak its name, and happily ever after love, just for example."

He looked around the class. "Some of you I recognize, but for those of you who are new, I'm Drake Dèmon, Fandom High's Demon-in-Residence. You can call me Drake, or Oh Captain My Captain, or even Hey You. Now tell me your names, class, and reason you're taking this class. And whether you are in love or have been in love. And, since I'm still working on the syllabus, let me know if there's a particular flavor of love you want to see covered."

You know, there was the part where Kennedy could have devoted some thought to answering the question Drake had posed, or the question of why the hell was she in this class, except there was the whole part where holy freaking crap he did say demon, right?

Oh, the bitchface was on, and Constance was so getting called later today.

Kate was starting to have second thoughts about taking this class. Her mind had been a lot clearer about love when she'd signed up. Ugh.

She was just going to have to pull through with a(n un)healthy amount of cynicism. And at least Weird Teacher Guy still seemed entertaining.

Okay... she wasn't sure how she ended up in this class because she knew a lot less about love than she knew about being on the run and in hiding -- and really, that said something.

She ducked her head over her desk and started taking notes. At least she liked the teacher, so maybe this class wouldn't be a complete embarrassment for her.

Robin tried to keep up with the descriptions, scribbling them in a kind of shorthand. He had a feeling he was going to love this class. No pun intended.

"Dinah Lance, senior, paperwork error." Before last semester, Dinah might have signed up for fun; during last semester, too. Now? Noooot so much. Although the teacher seemed entertainingly insane.

"Um. No, haven't been in love. Crushes. And I've gotten really close, maybe." Whatever-it-had-been with Jak wasn't going to progress any further than severe-like-friendly-love-and-trust now. Wait. "Okay, I was in love once while under a love potion," thanks, Karla. Heh. "But I don't know how accurate that was. It felt great, but I acted crazy-stupid. I'd like to see... oh, I guess courtly love." She put her chin down on her crossed arms. "Something that makes someone a better person. Not an idiot."

"Didi, junior, taking the class because you're my favorite teacher," she flattered shamelessly. "Um ... I love everybody, but if we're talking romantic love? I don't know."

She'd felt a lot of different things toward different people in her life, and she definitely felt much more than friendship for Jono. But could she call any of it love the way Drake meant it? She wasn't sure she was comfortable with that.

"Dan Humphrey, I'm a sophomore. I'm taking this class because I guess you could consider me a romantic. I'm a writer, I love all of that romantic stuff," he said. "And, um, I think I've been in love, yeah."

If not in love, completely infatuated with a girl who has spoken to him a total of two times and probably had no idea what his name was.

"Kennedy. Junior," she said, still looking massively wary, and with her fingers twitching slightly on her knee under her desk. "And I sure as hell didn't sign up for this class." For that matter, she doubted Constance had either; her Watcher was too thorough to overlook things like whether the class was being taught by a freaking demon.

Questions of her ability to even do so aside, it would probably be a bad idea to try and slay the teacher, huh? Yeeeeeeah. Might as well try to at least get through this period. She leaned back in her chair, trying to look casual (it wasn't working), and added, "Can't say I have been. Not ruling it out, it's just never been a thing."

She'd get to that other question. Give her a minute; the words were still percolating.

"I'm Seregil i Korit Solun Meringil Bokthersa," Seregil said the faint wry smile he usually wore now when introducing himself with his full name. "I am a senior, and yes I've been in love." His smile disappeared completely. "Or thought I was. It... didn't end well." To put it mildly.

At the end of class, Kennedy walked up to Drake, self-possessed mode at full throttle, and slapped a piece of paper down onto his desk. "There's your list. Don't go losing it or 'accidentally' setting it on fire or something."

...Fiona is not actually here for class today. She has, in fact, been taken on a Terribly Romantic spur-of-the-moment vacation to Thailand. My apologies *facepalm*
