DADA for Muggles [period 3, Wednesday]

Remus was in high spirits today. Part of it was the new term. Part of it was that the full moon had been last week, and he was in the first week of a new cycle. It didn't matter -- either way, he was smiling congenially at the class as they filed in.

"Good morning, and welcome to Defense Against the Dark Arts for Muggles. First, we need to define some important vocabulary. A muggle is what we call a non-magical person at home, though of course magic users are welcome in this class as well. You'll have to forgive any curiosity on my part. I'm still adjusting to the way other magic and wizards work in comparison to my own experiences."

Sirius was already leaning against the desk he'd found so comfortable last semester, glancing around the room for familiar faces. Since no one seemed to be screaming and running from the room when they saw him, he was optimistic for a quiet term.

"Dark Arts also seems to be defined differently, based on your own personal experiences," Sirius added. "We hope to find some common ground and help to provide you with some practical defenses for fighting evils of all kinds."

Especially the DVD player. The evil, evil DVD player.

"So, first, the introductions, which we're given to understand are customary on the first day." Remus gave Sirius a pleased, sidelong look. He was going to enjoy this. Though, out of kindness, he didn't ask their favorite subject in school. Sirius might have put an angered kneazle in his room as revenge. "So, your name, your favorite type of sweet, and what you consider a dark art. I'll go first. I'm Remus Lupin, I'm partial to Chocolate Frogs, and I think the dark arts comprise any number of practices that endanger lives or reduce the enjoyment thereof." He gave Sirius an expectant look.

Sirius gave him a slightly sour one in reply. "I'm Sirius Black," he said, "I love Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans, and the dark arts also include curses, charms and hexes that hurt others or yourself." He pointed a finger at a student at random. "Your turn. And for the rest of you, no repeating what another student says. That means you'll have to listen to each other."

He looked quite pleased with himself for thinking of that. See? He was getting the hang of this teaching bit.

The lecture was simple but it held promises of an interesting class. Jonas hadn't ever been exposed to anything resembling darkness until the last few years of his life.

Then, it had seemed to be a cover of darkness until he'd come here. Now, it was about adjustment and education to learn how to deal with those dark things.

Yeah, Kennedy already felt in a little over her head here. But wow, did she ever have the weirdest feeling this was gonna be useful someday. What was up with that?

Makita... really didn't know what was going on, and slouched down in her seat slightly, acutely aware how out-of-place she felt with her hat and too-large clothing compared to the rest of the civilians.

Gunn was still in a bit of a foul mood from yesterday so he was only half listening to the lecture.

He was however relieved to learn that this class was not about being a "daddy" of any sort.

Dru listened to the lecture and was intrigued. This class might be useful.

"I'm Jonas," he said, giving both professors a nod. "And I've only recently discovered sweets but I've taken to mint chocolate chip ice cream. I think a dark art would be --"

He paused, options running through his head before he finally chose, "--taking an innocent life."

"Kennedy," she said, thinking 'Muggle' sounded like a really weird word for a non-magical person and wondering if she should feel vaguely insulted. She went with not, for the time being. "Straight-up dark chocolate, the darker the better. And I'm still figuring this whole magic thing out, but I guess screwing with somebody against their will counts as the dark arts. I don't know, messing with their memory or... putting a hex on them for fun?"

"Dru Anderson," Dru said when it was her turn. "My favorite candy is M&M's. As far as Dark Arts go, where I'm from that would probably include hexes and spells, things that could potentially hurt other people, or cause them harm."

Warren was not taking his coat off for classes today, no. So he possibly looked a little overdressed as he introduced himself, but at least he didn't have feathers sticking out every which way for people to boggle at.

"I'm Warren. I think coffee totally counts as a sweet so long as you load it up with enough sugar, and a dark art would be..." He furrowed his eyebrows a little, trying to come up with something that the rest of the class hadn't already picked. And then he shrugged. "Any power that corrupts those using it."

Sirius was around before and after class.

But don't ask him to share his Every Flavour Beans.
