Study Hall, Monday [1/04]

Summer opened up study hall, taking time to set out an assortment of pastries. There was also coffee, tea and various juices to go along with the snacks.

She helped herself to a large cup of coffee before settling in with her laptop. She also had a book with her, for variety. And if anyone needed help with anything, they were free to interrupt.

"I met a couple of newbies yesterday that don't believe in magic, but I figured they'd just learn in time," Tony said.

"Get used to it, anyhow," Jack acknowledged. "I haven't met as many newbies as I should have. My little brother knows an older Dinah in another universe, though."

"Oh, is that Roy?" Tony asked. "I met him on Saturday. That was weird."

"It's an introduction to Fandom," Jack answered. "Dinah seemed kerflummoxed by it, too."

"Yeah, I bet," Tony said. "I kind of freaked him a little, too, asking about things I shouldn't have asked about."

"What did you ask?" Jack wondered. "He didn't mention anything except Dinah and one other person from home to me."

"If Dinah's a superhero where he's from," Tony said. "I didn't even think about secret identities."

"There are worlds where Dinah runs around in tights and fights crime?"

No, Jack hadn't known that. It made him reevaluate things slightly.

"She turned into a superhero one weekend," Tony explained. "Fishnet tights and all. I don't know if the person she became is real somewhere or if it's just something the island came up with." Any future plans Dinah might have regarding tights and masks were hers to tell Jack, if she chose.

"It must be at least as real as the world where I'm a priest," Jack said, not entirely buying the explanation. It would be odd to ask about a random piece of island strangeness.

"So you helped to break his brain, then."

"Not on purpose!" Tony said. "And you could totally be a priest somewhere. What if you'd been taken in by some Catholic family instead of by Sebastien?"

Jack raised an eyebrow at Tony. "I'm told there's a celibacy requirement. I'd never even try."

"Point," Tony grinned. "So what were you yelling at Karla about over there?"

"I never yell." Yes, Jack, you do, and you did. He lowered his voice confidingly. "I'd never pass judgment on Karla herself, but her world's insane. They make men wear magical jewelry on their pricks to track emotion and it's supposed to be some form of compliment. Also there was something about men knowing about her monthlies in there that I know I don't want to know more about."

Jack was normally rather good at being tolerant of different cultures, but that was failing hardcore in this particular case.

Tony's jaw dropped. After a moment, he managed to say, "Her world is... very different."

"She'll show you the rings if you ask," Jack offered helpfully.

"She has them here?" Tony glanced over at Karla, torn between curiosity and horror. "Is she going to... put them on people?"

Jack shook his head. "I didn't get around to asking that. I don't think so. Maybe, if there's someone she was going to bring home."

"So you're not volunteering?" Tony teased.

Jack laughed. "Let's just say I can think of other places I'd rather spend my time. Did you want to submit an application?"

Tony shook his head in a rapid, decisive movement. "I don't need any jewelry down there. Especially not some kind of mood radar ring and why would anyone want to know about her monthlies?"

"Like I'd ask!" Jack recovered his cool. "She said something about using the mood rings to track if men were in danger, maybe it's something similar? Somehow?"

He had no idea.

"Maybe they have some kind of breeding program?" Tony suggested. "You know, I don't think I want to even ask."

"I'm sure if they do, I'll hear about it sooner or later and in great detail," Jack said. "I'll keep you in the loop."
