Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

The benches in this section were a little further from the bonfire than the others. If people were sensible, they might want to keep all their clothes on over here, but Fandom, of course, has never been graced with an overabundance of sensible people.

"I have two plants," Kate shared. "That's about the level of responsibility I'm willing to take."

"Pretty safe choice," Jennifer said. "Did you name them?"

Kate chuckled. "The pothos is called Patrick. The cactus is still nameless 'cause I keep forgetting to ask Leto for proper desert plant names."

"Leto's big on desert plants?" Jennifer said. "I don't think Alice ever mentioned that."

"I don't think he's big on desert plants, as such," Kate said, "But he does come from a desert. And I got the cactus from him. So I think it should have an Arrakis name."

See how well she avoided doing anything about the mention of Alice?

"Oh, cool," Jennifer said, not even noticing. She wasn't aware at all about the... love triangle or whatever it was.

"My goldfish are just plain old goldfish. Hence good old normal names."

Normal names. Really.

Really, it was starting to look more like a rectangle by now. And love had very little to do with as far as Kate was concerned.

At least that's what she told herself. Moving on.

"Normal names," Kate echoed, amused.

"So, how was your Christmas?" Jennifer asked, changing the subject a little.

"Christmas was good. Very, very lazy and normal and kinda boring, which is good," Kate said, smiling. "I went home for a while."

"Me too," Jennifer said. "Time with the family is always good. Okay, usually good. But the sentiment is always there."

"Usually, yeah," Kate allowed. "I was happy to be back in Fandom too, though."

"Me too," Jennifer said. "And I''ll be grateful when I can turn back to being the big green me, too."

Kate's eyebrow quirked. "You're doing that on purpose nowadays?" Wow. They really hadn't talked in a while, had they?

"When I want to, even," Jennifer said. "A by-product of a trip home not too long ago. Long story. But now I don't have to get angry to switch over."

"So you, what? Like it now?"

Just curious, no judgment here.

Jennifer held up a hand, counting off her perceived benefits on her fingers. "Stronger, harder to hurt, taller, and prettier. There really isn't a downside, now."

"Except for the whole green thing," Kate said. "Not that green isn't a good color. But you're pretty as you are."

"Thanks," Jennifer said. "But it's hard to deny that I've got a much better body when I'm green."

"Well, I wouldn't know," Kate said with ease, and shrugged. "I haven't seen you like that."

She wasn't sure she wanted to.

"Well, give me a week or so, and I'll probably change back. Don't want to freak out the new kids too fast," Jennifer said.

"Yeah, better not. By the way, it's so weird, watching the new kids learn about the basics of this place," Kate mused. "Almost makes me feel old."

"Yeah, no kidding," Jennifer said. "I've only been here since the summer, and I'm starting to get that feeling. Like I'm a... grizzled old vet or something."

Kate nodded. "I have a fake little brother this time, and I didn't really even know how to begin explaining Fandom to him, 'cause I've already seen so much here."

"Oh, it's always tricky," Jennifer said. "What's his name?"

"Kurt Wagner," Kate said. And yes, she pronounced it near-correctly. "He seems to be from one of the worlds where some people have superpowers, though, so it wasn't too hard."
