Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

The benches in this section were a little further from the bonfire than the others. If people were sensible, they might want to keep all their clothes on over here, but Fandom, of course, has never been graced with an overabundance of sensible people.

[Please wait for OCD! OCD is up! This is the SECOND post for general mingling. Use this post if your browser can't handle the comment load of the first mingling post. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I could try and convince you if you'd like," Helen offered. "Would't want you to feel left out or anything."

All right, she might be looking just the slightest bit mischievous.

"I don't think I could stop you from trying," said Bod, looking a little amused. "I don't know how successful you'll be. It's cold out here. I wouldn't want to get frostbite."

Helen looked at him assessingly, eyes still sparkling. "Hmmm... How about... but you're so close to the fire, you'd be nice and toasty warm? "Or," she tried to keep as straight a face as possible, without great success, "I could always keep you warm. Or introduce you to others who'd be glad to help."

She grinned at him. "Honestly, I'm not sure I could find a reason that would convince you. Not without knowing you better."

Bod could appreciate honesty even if she was trying to get him to remove clothing. He pulled one hand out of the pocket of his jacket and let the cool air hit his fingers, chilling them.

"I didn't know so many people would be willing to help warm a complete stranger just to fulfill a tradition," he said, looking around. "Have you managed to convince others?"

"Two," she admitted. "Even promised to nurse them back to health should they take cold. An offer I'm glad to extend to you."

"Even though you only know my name?" asked Bod, still a little uncertain if the tradition was worth honoring. It was awfully cold and he could almost hear Silas fixing him with a look.

She stiffened unconsciously, too caught off guard for it to have been an act. "Are you questioning my honor?"

"What?" asked Bod, wondering where that had come from. "I wasn't aware your honor was in question."

"You suggested that I might not keep my word," Helen said, looking just a bit hurt. "Simply because all I know of you is what your name tag says. I assure you that if I make a promise, I keep it. If you take off your shirt and then take cold, I promised to nurse you back to health. I would not go back on that."

"You're making assumptions," Bod said, voice going steely at her presumptions. "I didn't question your honor or your ability to keep promises. I asked you that because you barely know me and I wasn't sure if that would be a comfortable thing for you."

Bod scowled, shoving his hands deeper into his pockets and wondering how many language misunderstandings he would have.

She stared at him. "I... you..."

"I apologize," she said stiffly. "I misunderstood. But even if I had never met you before, if I found you ill somewhere, I would care for you. It would only be right. My comfort would have no bearing on that. If the illness was caused by something I did or suggested... I would be even more responsible for your well-being."

"Asking me would be better than making incorrect assumptions," Bod said, pursing his lips but lightening his tone. "You don't know me, I don't know you and I had no way of knowing that about you."

"And now I understand." Bod nodded, feeling slightly bad about his earlier offense but didn't apologize. "We just misunderstood each other. It's all right."

She nodded also. "Good. I'm glad."
