Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

The benches in this section were a little further from the bonfire than the others. If people were sensible, they might want to keep all their clothes on over here, but Fandom, of course, has never been graced with an overabundance of sensible people.

"Well if he's already hitting on Tweety of all people, I'm sure he's interested," Emma commented dryly. "Too bad he seems to like blondes, or I'd point him towards Jeannie."

Her mouth quirked in a slight smirk. "Don't be sulky, Jack. It doesn't suit you."

"So what does suit me?" Jack teased, grinning up at her. "I'm desperate for your opinion, Emma. And I didn't know you were so close to Miss Gray as to care about her social life."

"I don't care about her social life, but I do care about my amusement for turning an amorous boy into her path," Emma corrected. "That's what suits me."

She reached out to flick her fingers through his curls. "And that smile suits you much more than that gloomy face, as you well know."

"For you I'll keep on the brave face," he said, genuinely relaxing under her touch. "Can you believe we've been here since May? I feel quite the grizzled veteran."

"You? Grizzled? Hardly. You look the picture of youth and innocence to those who don't know any better," she teased, perfectly happy to continue petting him. A little bit of spoiling after having his sister pick at his vampire probably would not be amiss. "Almost a year, and I have another year to go."

"And then college and more school," Jack reminded her. He adored the petting. "... which I suppose is the customary thing, if I stay in this time."

This was Jack's way of asking if she thought he should try to go.

"It is, for those of us with talent and brains, and the drive to use them," she answered, letting her fingers toy with his hair. "Potential ought to be achieved, after all."

That was a yes, he should go.

"Even if one thinks one's already at one's potential?" Jack said playfully. He knew he wasn't, but she was making him feel better. Relaxed. It was showing as braggadocio. "I should talk to dear Tweety. She fancies going to school to be a detective."

Which was a notion he still had a hard time wrapping his head around.

"She couldn't find her shoes if they were right in front of her," Emma snarked.

"And I'm sure there's plenty of classes for you out there on things that Sebastien of yours hasn't imprinted into your clever little mind. Like contemporary law, since he hasn't lived that, yet, or new forensics techniques."

"Well, no, but she'd know the official things and she'll be patient about explaining them," Jack said. He brightened at what she said. "I'm taking a class in one of those this time! Justice & Law. And I had a forensics workshop this summer."

"You'll have to let me read your notes, then. I'll admit to being slightly curious as to the topic," she laughed. "But I'm not sure if Dinah and 'patient' go together. I'd be afraid she'd fly off on some shiny tangent."

"She can tell me what places to go to on that ... computer thing." Internet, Jack. "Better than me puzzling it out on my own, and more entertaining."

"I don't know, it might be entertaining to watch you use the internet," Emma pointed out. "For me, at least."

Jack gave her a happy kind of glare. "I can use the internet."

He knew email, and once he'd checked movie showtimes. He just didn't get the point.

Emma just smiled and kept petting him. "I'm sure you can, darling," she soothed. "But I could see you getting indignant when you stumble across the inevitable idiot."

"Hmmmph."

And that was all Jack would say, but, from the way he tilted his mouth up for a kiss, he could hardly have been that upset.

Emma was perfectly happy to lean over and give him a long, slow kiss. <<Welcome home, Jack.>>
