World Wars in the Media, Tuesday

"So it's time for your exams," Mitchell announced, slumped back on a couch in the back of the room. "It's fairly simple, really. Pick up that pen and that paper, pick a country, and write about what you found interesting or horrifying or even good about their approach to the media during one of these wars." He beamed at the class. "Then write down what you learned from it. If you want extra credit, give me a bit on your favorite war movie." Beat. "...As long as it's not Red Bird Down. Travesties they're spitting out in cinema these days."

Dinah picked England, mainly thinking about Churchill, and wrote about how in the face of being constantly bombed, they managed to do that "stiff upper lip" thing during WWII well enough to gain support from America and other countries; and how it was the same kind of stubbornness that had insisted on the Treaty of the Versailles along with the French and Americans in the First World War, and painted the Germans as the sole instigators. Same trait, different wars, just used differently but portrayed the same in the media, of the UK knowing what was right, and doing it. Worse ways to get support, but reality was not always the same thing.

Then she admitted that Meta for Casablanca was her favorite for all the 'international' bits, even if they were cheesy Hollywood international bit players and costuming, and of course, war-time romance. Siiiiigh.

Leda mentioned that she'd have loved to have seen the Marx Brothers do a movie where they outwitted Hitler (remembering some old Looney Toons shorts she'd seen), then went on to talk about how Hollywood during the second world war.

Kate was pretty distracted by other stuff in her head, and ended up writing something half-assed about Germany and propaganda and excellent public speaking skills. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't terribly original or well thought-out, either. But it was all she could muster.

"So, what's my excuse for bothering you going to be next term?"

"A decent enough excuse, although kind of on the unlikely side," Kate said after pursing her lips for a second or two. "Horror movie class would balance Weird Teacher Guy's fluffy romance thing nicely."

And maybe if she took that particular class, she'd actually catch Drake's name at some point.

Jenny wrote passionately (and, it must be said, with a great deal of knowledge that seemed rather firsthand) about England during the Second World War.

"You could be Weird Irish Teacher Guy?" Kate offered with a chuckle. "But 'cause I actually know your name, calling you Mitchell is so much easier."

Chloe ended up writing about both England and Germany and the way that Germany used propaganda to keep the war machine going, and how England used their own type of propaganda to get people to stand up and do the right thing. She also wrote about how even though they were constantly getting bombed and attacked, they had still not backed down from doing what they thought was right and being firm in their beliefs about the war.

She then admitted that her favorite war time movie was indeed Casablanca and how she hoped that Mitchell would be teaching another class about film next term.
