Ethics [Thursday, December 3, 1st period]

Anakin was trying very hard (very, very hard) to look as if he didn't know or care that he was wearing an entire elf costume today.

Yes, he'd set the stupid hat on fire. And the shoes with the bells. They kept. Coming. Back.

"You've had two weeks with your droid babies," Anakin said. "I trust that you've all learned valuable lessons about restraint in the face of lust, or at least the value of good birth control. Now we'll move on to the last of the seven major sins: sloth. Originally, sloth was described as 'an uneasiness of the mind'," he continued. "Apathy. Melancholy. Joylessness. And importantly, the decision not to do anything about it."

He shrugged. "The modern view understands that the mind is slightly more complicated than that and sometimes it is impossible to will yourself not to be sad. Instead, this sin focuses on the failure to utilize your talents and gifts."

He made eye contact with each student. "In a place filled with as many talented people as this one, I can view it as almost criminal to not live up to the potential each of you has. Today, pair up and talk about what your plans for the future are, and how what you will be doing will be helping you in what you might think of as your greater destiny."

He rolled his eyes. "You may also use this time to complain about what a horrible person I was to saddle you with fake children for a period of weeks, if you insist upon it."

Raven almost didn't want to give Ariela up. It had been tiring, but part of her had enjoyed the experience.

It was totally second nature for Rose to be protective and so she possibly didn't hate the droid babies even as much as she bitched about them. But she sure as hell was happy to get rid of Vassily and Kolya and get a full night's sleep again.

Karla couldn't give Wee Baby Merlin back, not yet. She had a feeling that Francine might cry if she didn't get a chance to say goodbye to him.

While she didn't hate the baby enough to think about lighting Anakin's head on fire, she did think the jingly shoes were a fitting punishment.

She was ignoring her own pointy hat at the moment. If anyone asked, she'd say it was Puck's hat.

She really, really might.

Then again given her current outfit, she really, really might cry anyway. "I love the Christmas spirit, really I do," she said as she walked over carrying strategically-placed books that utterly failed to help. "But dear God."

Karla glanced up at Francine, turned bright red, and hastily looked down at her desk. "I don't know," she said--or tried to, as the first that that came out was a kind of strangled squawk.

Clearing her throat, she tried again. "Sorry. It's dry in here."

Good cover, Karla. "That's a very interesting--outfit," she said, striving for casual. "Fandom's fault. Look! Merlin's dressed like a tiny snowman. Isn't that adorable?"

That's right, Karla, eyes on the kid.

"Awww! Did you do that, or did Fandom?" Francine was trying very, very hard not to notice how hard it was not to notice, and failing miserably.

Katchoo was just fine with handing the baby back, thanks. Having one in the room had been enough, and the nights there'd been two . . .

Okay, she was just fine with it in an almost wistful if you squinted way, but mostly fine; mechanical things shouldn't look that close to real. It was frikkin' disturbing.

Francine slipped in as unobtrusively as she could, but had to stop for a moment to look at Katchoo's outfit. Then bury her face in her hands.

"Why do I have to be the slutty elf?" she wailed, not for the first time today.

While Jonas had adapted to Sarah somewhat, he still knew he wasn't ready to do this for any longer than he had to so when it came time to give her back, he was happy to. He'd miss her but he had a lot to learn before thinking about that.

Emma was there, although the bruises under her eyes and slight shake of her hands had less to do with dealing with Marcus - who, okay, she hadn't minded that much once she got used to it - and more to do with spraining her brain yesterday.

So she was here, half-asleep in her seat after having handwavily reclaimed Marcus from shoving him at Tara (sans explanation) yesterday. The earrings from Karla carefully (deliberately) obscured under her hair, keeping the minds of her classmates at bay.

So tired, that not even Skywalker's shoes were funny, and normally Emma would be silently gleeful at the island's sense of humor.

Karla sent a tentative thought back Emma's way, only to be blocked by a familiar psychic shield. And wasn't that interesting?

So instead she tried to catch Emma's eye, going for a look that conveyed concern without prying.

Karla got a slight wiggle of Emma's fingers in a wave before she tore a sheet out of her notebook and jotted down a note:

Did something I shouldn't & brain needed a band-aid. Too quiet in here by myself! Don't like it. :(

Message written, she tapped the paper slightly, then slid it into her lap. Karla could probably do her vanishing-thing from there to pick it up.

Emma was right; a moment later, the paper disappeared. It reappeared on Karla's own notebook, where she glanced at it quickly, jotted down a reply, and did the same thing in reverse.

Did it have anything to do with that garbled shout I heard yesterday? I have a packet of headache powder if you want. Drink it in hot water like tea.

Kinda. Non-humanoid brains hurt my mind. She wrote quickly. I may take you up on that after class.

And considering how little Emma like relying on anything other than her own gifts, the ease with which she agreed was probably a good indicator of the condition of her brain.

Upon reading that, Karla nearly leapt over to Emma to make sure her brain wasn't bleeding or something of that nature. Emma really, really wasn't fond of outside help.

Non-humanoid brains? Sounds like a story there. It'll be ready whenever you want it. Hot water and all, if you like.

Re: Listen to the lecture

That? That was Emma's best 'Sit down and keep your grubby little healer-hands off me' glare that she could manage. No, she didn't need to use her powers to know what Karla was thinking, and she was agreeing to use Magical Aspirin(tm), not be fussed over like some stray kitten.

Re: Listen to the lecture

Karla held up her hands in surrender and gave Emma her best 'I haven't done anything yet' face.

Wouldn't work, of course, but had to be done.

Another piece of paper appeared on her desk. Just be glad my name isn't Morton!

Yet. She hadn't done anything yet.

I think I've got your cousin properly cowed, she wrote back, smirking slightly. You can't threaten me with Morton.

Re: Listen to the lecture

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2009-12-03 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. The nice thing to do would be to let Karla earn that glare.

She had to smother a fit of giggles--turning them into a moderately unconvincing cough--when she got Emma's note.

Trust me, you only think that. When it comes to things he considers 'appropriate fussing,' there is no cowing him.

And the Darkness have mercy on Emma if she honestly thought otherwise.

Parker was actually a little sad to give the droid baby back. Once she'd figured out how to get it -- her -- to stop crying, she'd actually kinda enjoyed having it around.

She consoled herself however with the thought that if she missed the baby too much, she could always steal it back.

Ellie actually didn't mind taking care of Sarah, but she was also glad to return her. Being a parent was not something she was ready for, even to a robotic baby.

Maron was sorta sad, sorta glad.

You know--she'd had fun having Dai and taking care of him but at the same time... she liked her free time, too.

Yuffie, to put it simply, looked like Hell frozen over. She had gotten less than two hours of sleep a night, and it just sucked that baby Aerith finally quieted down the day she was to go back.

She thought she should get bonus points for setting the bassinet down carefully instead of flinging it at the professor's head.
