Adventures in Literature, Wednesday, Period Three [Class Fourteen]

Drake had sent out a notice to his students that class would be in the Danger Shop again. When the students arrived, however, Drake was nowhere in sight. The Danger Shop had been transformed into a medievally gothic room all decorated in blue, with blue stained-glass windows. To the west was a door leading to the next room.

There were extravagant medieval costumes (and masks) for those who wished to wear them, but it wasn't necessary.

A parchment stuck to the entrance of the Danger Shop read: The prince had provided all the appliances of pleasure. There were buffoons, there were improvisatori, there were ballet-dancers, there were musicians, there was Beauty, there was wine. All these and security were within. Without was the "Red Death."

There were a twisty maze of passageways, all alike. Well, not quite alike. While each room held couches for lounging, drinks and snacks for nomming, and music for grooving, each one was a different color....

Purple Room [Ail: Class Fourteen]

The second chamber was purple in its ornaments and tapestries, and here the panes were purple.

Rock music is playing here. You can go east back to the Blue Room or head west to the Green Room.

This was Didi's speed, yeah. She lolled on a sofa and hummed along with the music, a little off-key.

A tall masked figure in red drifted through the room. It stopped upon seeing Didi, however, and put hands on hips. "I can't play this part with you, that's just weird," came Drake's voice from behind the mask.

"I don't get what's with the mask, anyhow," Didi grinned up at him. "The job is to escort people to their afterlife, not to scare them to death."

She patted the sofa. "Want to hang out?"

Drake pulled off the mask and flopped down on the sofa. "Poe had issues. He wrote some really good stuff, but, man, issues."

"He was halfway crazy," Didi said, in a way that suggested she didn't mind that at all. "I mean, cool guy, smart as anything, but you don't marry your 13-year-old cousin in that culture if you're tightly wrapped, y'know?"

"The most brilliant and creative minds are often the most crazed," Drake mused. "You think your little sis had anything to do with that?"

Didi shrugged with both shoulders. "Probably, but she can't do anything if it isn't already there."

A pause. "... usually. She -- usually."

Drake nodded. "So generally there has to be a spark already there to ignite the flames," he said.

"I think so, anyhow," Didi said, and leaned forward to pensively brush hair out of her eyes. "The whole 'claiming' people isn't really my gig. I guess 'cause I get everybody, y'know?"

"And that must keep you busy enough," Drake said. "I bet you hardly have time to plot out just how everyone is going to die, let alone chasing down precognitive survivors of airplane or roller coaster crashes and killing them in macabre but creative ways."
