Thanksgiving Meal, Cafeteria, Thursday

The cafeteria's dining room looked much less institutional today than one might expect. White linens had been draped on the tables, and flowers and autumn leaves were arranged in centerpieces on the tables. It was probably best not to ask where they'd found enough silver and china -- yet, somehow, there it was.

The scene in the kitchen it was another story, and the controlled chaos there was -- while mostly manageable -- definitely loud, hot, and confusing.

In other words, it was a proper Thanksgiving.

"It's for giving thanks," Maron said, grinning and wriggling her hands for the baby. "So they celebrate with food."

"Giving thanks for what?" Azula asked, puzzled. She handed Dai to Maron and the bag with its baby bottles to her. "I know I'm giving thanks Dai will no longer plague my nights."

"Food?" Maron said, as she juggled the baby and the bottles and tried to get settled in. "I think that's it, anyway. I've never celebrated it before."

"Hmmm..." then she watched Maron like a hawk. "Hold him properly, if he falls our grades our forfeit."

"You could have waited until I'd gotten settled before handing me the bottles," she complained half-heartedly as she worked things out to her satisfaction and making sure she was holding the baby carefully.

Maron wrinkled her nose cheerfully at Dai. "That's right, isn't is, sweetheart? Would have made way more sense that way, oh yes it would have!"

"It'll help train your coordination," she said, dismissive.

She pulled a face at Maron's cheerful rambling, "Don't baby him."

Oh, that was a total lost cause.

Maron blinked up at Azula. "I'm a gymnast," she objected. "I have fantastic coordination. And baby talk won't hurt a baby."

"Then there's no problem if I gave you the bottle at the same time." Azula raised an eyebrow, "I read an article that stated baby talk will be detrimental to the development of the child."

"Nonsense," Maron said briskly. "It will not--otherwise half the population would be brain damaged."

"My father never did that to me and I turned out fine," she said. Fine as any power-centric, borderline sociopath can be that is.

"And I got to watch as other children got it, and they turned out fine," was her response as she pressed a quick kiss to Dai's forehead.

Azula observed this. "When you have children you're going to spoil them silly, aren't you?"

Maron's grin probably said it all, at that.

"That's the plan," she said happily. "And they'll never be lonely, if I have anything to say about it."

"Dai's fussing, he must be hungry," Azula pointed out, changing the topic.

Maron gave her a side-long glance as she almost absently fished out a bottle and tossed it at Azula, wondering if the other girl would catch it.

"Then we feed him," she answered, choosing that route rather than inquiring about the change in subject. "In this, we'll spoil him too."

Azula snatched it from the air, showing her own excellent reflexes and smirked. If there was one thing missing from Azula, it was a humble bone.

"You will spoil him. I, on the other hand, will give him excellent discipline and give him what he needs but not more than that."

"Ah!" Maron looked utterly innocent, eyes dancing. "Then you're the father?"

Oh, Maron.

If Azula was drinking anything there would have been a glorious spit take right about now.

Fortunately for Maron, she wasn't drinking anything. But her jaw did drop. Her mouth opened and closed again.

"You..." Azula began, after a second of composing herself, "You do too good a job at discombobulating me." She narrowed her eyes at Maron. "Not everyone can do that." And then Azula smiled. Well, the corners of her mouth turned up. "Congratulations."

"I'll take the compliment as it is," she answered lightly, almost teasingly. "Besides, it's good to see you smile--everyone should."

"I smile," she said, a little defensive. "I suppose in terms of traditional roles I do take up the stricter role in this assigned partnership. I could, from a certain point of view, be seen in the 'father' role."

She was so sensitive!

Maron nodded. "I know you smile," she said soothingly. "But--you know, I think most people ought to smile more. It's not just you, though it's nice to see. And that's definitely what I was thinking, about the roles."

Okay, Maron had just been saying what came into her head, but--that sounded better.

Azula raised her eyebrow, uh-huh.

"Instructions: It wakes up during the middle of the night. It is constantly hungry, I have a schedule for its feeding time. The diapers are in the bag as well. I have tried to time the times Dai needs a change but he still manages to get off schedule, flexibility is a must."

She passed a printed schedule to Maron, everything regimented.

...

...

Maron took the schedule. Stared at it.

"...this is a joke, right?"

"I'm always serious about schedules," she said firmly.
