"Before any of you gets it into your heads that today's class is going to be an easy one," Algren said, arms over his chest as the students filed into the room, "think again. Just because we're leading up to a holiday doesn't mean that we'll be any less academic than we are in other lessons."

Stop laughing. He's trying, here.

"And so I want you all to think long and hard about how Columbus probably brought syphilis back with him to Europe from the New World while you watch this movie. It puts this ridiculous holiday into perspective."

Right, Nathan. You keep telling yourself that.

"Even though Thanksgiving is celebrating the first successful colony in America," Jim added, shooting Nathan an amused look as he pushed in the movie into the tape player--how quaint was that? "But nevermind that now."

"It's a holiday week," Algren sighed. "Try not to think too hard about how in the world a beagle setting a ping-pong table for dinner is supposed to relate to the history of sex, and I'll let you all get away with just one handout about the idiot who thought he was in India. If you're interested."

Look, he didn't care what the holiday was about. He was still well steeped in denial about his priorities in this particular classroom.

Alex just grinned wider at her and did snap a picture. Might not have been posed but it had mother and robot baby and that was good enough for him.

Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiies. Emma hadn't really changed her routine at all, except for getting up when it screamed in the early morning at 12, 2, and 4 on the dot. It just meant she took more daytime naps.

Alex glanced over at her and smirked, clearly not believing that. He figured it'd take a lot to get Emma to give up her social life. Robot babies were not a lot.

<<Aww, Emma. You're feeling alienated?>> His smirk turned into an exaggerated frown and he tapped his heart. <<What can I do to improve your feelings of alienation?>>

<<Besides babysit.>>

<<Aw, I bet you'd be a great babysitter,>> Emma pouted. <<I think you'd be a great influence on the kid. You should take us out for ice cream or something.>>>

Or booze, booze counted as something, and Baby ought to learn how to drink and flirt responsibly sooner rather than later.

Alex's smirk was back and he found himself glancing at the robot baby. It wasn't...that scary a thing to look at but he'd still rather avoid children of his own.

<<Ice cream?>> Alex asked, snickering. <<That what you really want? Wouldn't that just make the kid hyper?>>

<<How the hell should I know? Besides, it just eats out of its bottle-thing. I'd get its share of the ice cream.>> See, she'd totally had an ulterior motive. This was Emma. <<Or I can always inform Kyle that it's his turn to deal with robo-child.>>

Parenting skills? What parenting skills?

<<You shove your kid onto Kyle and I just take you to get ice cream?>> Alex approved of this idea. Really, he didn't mind the robot kid coming along but, with his luck, he'd end up kicking it or losing it or something. <<If you're sure you can be parted from your adorable child and your maternal instincts won't suffer, I'm sure I can be convinced to take you out.>>

Emma coughed to hide a laugh and slid down in her seat to hide behind her magazine. <<Yeah, me and my maternal instincts will manage just fine, I think.>>

<<So, is that a yes, you want me take you out somewhere to help you recover from the stress your tiny adorable machine is putting on you?>>

Wasn't like it was too hard a prospect for Alex to be talked into, of course. A night out with a person he liked? Twist his arm, why don't you?

<<Sure I could make you forget about the stress of parenting for a few hours. Or a night. Or something.>>

<<It's a yes,>> she confirmed. <<I've got play rehearsal tonight, but I'm free the rest of the week. Well, except when I've got to help cook the all-school Thanksgiving with the rest of my cooking class.>> Which she'd be happy to blow-off to hang out with Alex, if she wasn't afraid that the Chef would find her and drag her back to the kitchen.

<<So either tomorrow or some day after Thanksgiving,>> he noted, easily clearing his schedule since he had a whole lot of nothing going on.

Well, except the fact that he had to make an appearance at this school Thanksgiving thing just to see her cook now. Yeah, he was just going to grin at that thought.

<<Preference?>>

<<I am not wearing a 'kiss the chef' apron, Alex,>> she commented, catching that train of his thoughts. <<So don't get your hopes up.>>

<<Shame!>> That would have been enjoyable to see. <<Still coming to see you cook. I've seen you maternal and now I'll get to see you domestic. I'm just seeing you in all kinds of different lights. Sure you can make it work, Emma. You're hot like that.>>

<<Riiiiiiiiiiight. Maternal and domestic. That's me,>> Emma teased. <<I think I like it better when you cook.>>

Hey, it had been tasty grilled cheese.

<<Once in a blue moon thing, unforunately>>, Alex said, shrugging. <<You'll have to enjoy me for my other talents, I'm afraid.>>

<<Luckily for both of us, you're a man of many talents,>> she quipped, glancing at him from over her magazine. <<After Thanksgiving, then? Since I'm sure trying to cook with a baby around will require lots of de-stressing.>>

Maternal and domestic at the same time. If he tried to slip into the kitchen with his phone for another picture, she'd have to kill him.

<<After Thanksgiving>>, he agreed, already thinking those nefarious picture taking thoughts. He had to try, at least. <<I'm pretty good at helping people de-stress.>>

That? That would be Emma projecting a mental cartoon-image of her beating a cartoon-him over the head with her magazine. Repeatedly.

<<I can hear you, Emma reminded him sweetly. <<Tell you what. If you can sneak past Chef and find me? And don't take any photos? I could be convinced to find a treat for you.>>

She'd steal an extra dessert for him or something. Emma wasn't above bribery.

<<I'll see what I can do,>> he said, gladly taking that challenge and sending a grin in her direction. <<I'm not one to resist a treat.>>

He winked at her, knowing that she wasn't talking dirty but unable to make it dirty anyway. It wasn't like her robot kid could tell.

Emma covered Marcus's eyes and shook a finger at Alex. <<Behave. We might give it an identity disorder if he sees mommy flirting with people who aren't daddy.>>

...she usually waited until it was asleep to do those sorts of things.

<<Telling me to behave is futile,>> he informed her, shrugging. <<I can't help it if you're hot and I enjoy telling you that in all sorts of ways. Your kid's gonna have to deal with it. I like sleeping with his mother.>>

He'd done that on purpose.

<<Naaaaaaaaaughty!>> Not that Emma minded. At all.

Heck, if Alex did manage to sneak past the Chef, it might be worth it to put up with Jeannie's shrieks of moral outrage to go find an unused pantry for a break. It might mean detention for life if they were caught, but that was half the fun.

<<Although if you didn't like sleeping with me, I'd be sad.>>

<<And we wouldn't want that.>> Even without really knowing what she was thinking, his thought patterns were running parallel to hers. Pantries were nothing. Sex standing up was fun. <<You like me naughty, Emma. Don't deny it.>>
