Library [11/19]

Sam got to the library bright and early today, even after stopping for a muffin and coffee. As soon as he was set up for the day, he got onto the computer to do his now-daily tasks of searching for Sylar before losing himself in websites full of meaningless but still intriguing lists. He thought about picking up a book, but he knew full well that he wouldn't be able to concentrate on what he was reading. Getting sucked into the internet was, strangely enough, the better option right now.

Chuck came in around lunch, as per usual, bringing food he had no hand in making, as per usual. "Hey, Sam."

"Hey, Chuck," Sam said, pushing himself away from the computer. He might never admit it, but he was actually starting to look forward to Chuck's visits.

Okay, so he might be willing to admit it, but only if Chuck was around to hear and get embarrassed.

He would not get embarrassed, thank you. He'd just be utterly terrified.

"I'd ask if you were looking at anything interesting but we've already established you're weird and don't look at porn in public," he said as he sat down. "So I'll just ask how you're doing."

"I'm okay," Sam said with a shrug. "Although I'm still convinced that most people don't look at porn in public."

"Most people don't admit to doing it in public," Chuck said. "But they do. Trust me, I'm like an expert on depravity."

"Which is why you don't mind admitting that you do it," Sam teased. "The experts always have to be the ones to lead the way."

"I'll freely admit I have no shame," he said with a shrug. "It only holds people back, I find."

"I guess, for a businessman, that's probably a good thing?" Sam said uncertainly.

"Not exactly, no," Chuck said, shaking his head. "You wouldn't believe how much money my father's spent keeping me and Serena's exploits out of the papers. Business is all about looking like you're the epitome of grace and class."

"Ah, I see. And it wouldn't be easier to just, you know, do things that don't end up in the papers?" Sam asked, smirking like he already knew the answer.

"And be bored all the time? No thank you," Chuck said. He paused. "Now I'm beginning to see why I've been banned from Thanksgiving."

Groping on your stepsister probably wouldn't be part of the Thanksgiving spirit, he supposed.

"You were banned from Thanksgiving?" Sam said. "Like, from your own family's celebration?"

"Not officially banned. But it was strongly suggested that I stay here." Chuck almost looked proud about this. "My father is going to be in Beijing and won't be around to keep an eye on me."

"Oh," Sam said. That sounded kind of sad to him, but he was aware that he and Chuck didn't exactly think alike. "Are you coming to the Thanksgiving dinner here then?"

"I don't think so. Those types of things aren't really me," he said. "I mean, you saw what happened the last time I showed up to a family type dinner."

Drug extravaganza.

"So you're going to...what? Spend the day alone?" Sam asked. "That doesn't seem right."

"You've met my father. Do you really think this will be the first holiday I've spent alone?" he asked. "It's not like I'm going to be weeping alone in my bed because I'm not watching football and eating mashed potatoes."

"You don't have to do that stuff, but holidays still weren't meant to be spent alone," Sam insisted. "I mean, even when my dad was gone for Christmas, Dean was still there. You shouldn't be by yourself. There'll be plenty of space for you at dinner, if you end up wanting to come."

"I'll think about it," Chuck said, solely to humor Sam. Possibly sitting at a table with Arthur, Katchoo and about a million other people that hated him? Yeah, not happening again without the aid of drugs.

"Great," Sam said, with an almost full, genuine smile. If Chuck didn't show up for the dinner, Sam could always send people after him later.
