Art 101 - Wednesday, Period Four - 11/18

Nick had been a little worried about this class, not in the least because he'd not really been sure how to cover such a subject as Romanticism. That was why he decided simply to set up a classroom with a few choice pieces scattered around the room, some chairs, and art supplies.

"Today, we'll be dealing with Romanticism. Now, considering what we've learned in our previous classes, I thought that a discussion along with a free expression period might be best. Feel free to take a chair, or spend a few minutes looking at the pictures. They're as much a part of this as anything else."

And he sat.

Or look at the paintings.

"Romanticism, in art, literature, music... it was a change in focus. It was when the emotion evoked by a piece of work became as important as the artistry and symbolism. Some even say that this is the period when art moved from just being visual symbols and came into itself.

"What do you think, of these pieces? What do you think of the inclusion of the emotional along with the intellectual in the appreciation of art? I'd like to know how you feel about it."

"I think emotion makes a piece much more powerful," Raven said softly. "Appreciating beauty is passive. When a painting or other work of art makes you actually feel something, it is a more active connection."

"Even if what it makes you feel is repulsion? Anger? Terror? The Romantic movement was when these emotions became considered 'worthy' of art, so to speak."

"I would not find works such as those interesting to look upon," Raven said. "There is enough of that in life."

Nick raised an eyebrow at that.

"And yet, can such art not serve a purpose? And can't something contain more than just one emotion? Would you avoid all art that could evoke such emotions?"

"I would not deliberately seek out something that made me angry or repulsed me," Raven said. "What would be the point of that? I am still learning emotions, but some that I have tasted I never wish to experience again."

He leaned back.

"But there's a difference between seeking art and making art. If, for example" and he thought back to a few artists he'd known "you chose to portray a battle as repulsive in an effort to remind people of the truth of violence... could you see how even repulsion could be used?"

Raven nodded. "I can understand that," she said. "But it would not be to my tastes to make or view."

"Fair enough," he said with a nod.

Who was studying the one picture with the beautiful sunset colors.

"You like the sun," Raven observed, drifting over to Nick. She remembered his own painting because she was all observant like that.

He turned to smile at her as he nodded.

"Yes. It holds... a very special place in my heart, I suppose."

"I have always found sunsets more lovely than the sunrise," Raven said. "Perhaps because I have always felt more comfortable at night."

His lips twitched in a smile.

"I suppose I could say the same. I've been something of a nightowl for" centuries "a while myself."

"I find the world more peaceful at night," Raven said. "Not entirely, for I know there are those who use the darkness to commit evil acts, but overall, it is quieter for one such as I."

"There are," he agreed with a faint frown, "but there are also those who work in the darkness to prevent such things. I've done such work in my time."

"Then I thank you for that," Raven murmured. Oh, the irony.

"How did you come to be a teacher then?" she asked curiously.

One day, Nick's little secret WILL come out to the general populous. I continue to be amused that it hasn't yet.

Also *noms Pocky* anyone have suggestions on a new messenger bag? Mine broke.

Awwwww, c'mon, let Raven find out so she can freak out on him. ;)

Dude, I'm all for it coming out. It just HASN'T.

And Nick will freak out too, start running around attempting whammy to prevent the enforcers and everything...

Then let's come up with something. :D
