Applied Science, 11/16, Period 1

It was probably best not to ask why there was a pony observing class today. Actually, the pony had been around for a while; the ribbons braided into his mane and tail, however ... well, therein lay a story about Tyler and Steve Rogers both being that combination of bored and worried a long animal transformation can bring, and Tony being annoyingly cranky, and the pink and purple ribbons all but literally falling into their lap.

Tyler had pony bites on his hands, but it was worth it.

"Gunpowder," he announced, glancing to the horse a final time before talking. "We're making it. We aren't in the Danger Shop today, so put your lab coats, goggles and gloves on, and, ladies, pull your hair back." He waited for his instructions to be followed before talking again.

"What you're going to do is combine sulfur, saltpeter and carbon. You're going to grind them all up, then mix them, four parts saltpeter to one of carbon -- your carbon is in charcoal briquettes -- and one of sulfur." He turned to scrawl 2 KNO3 + S + 3 C → K2S + N2 + 3 CO2 on the board. "That is the reaction behind it," he said, going on to explain the equation,, and ignored the pony's reaction to any flaws in the formula. "Once you've got the powder fine enough, show me and, if it looks okay, we can go outside and set off model rockets with it."

"This is the real stuff. People get hurt doing this, so go slowly and be careful. Any questions, comments, anything looks funny, please talk to me before you blow your hand off."

Ben was taking lots of notes--this wasn't exactly something he got to mess around with at home.

Priestly was kind of distracted from taking notes today. He was busy staring at that pony.

Lion-o made sure to copy down everything written on the board. He wasn't to eager to accidentally blow anything up.

Glee.

Ino's notes were, really, pretty sporadic. She already knew how to make this stuff, but--

Glee.

Momoko was twitching. She really really wanted to pet the pony (not dirty) and yet she knew it was important to take careful notes or she would blow herself and everyone else up. It was GUNPOWDER! This was so totally cool! Ah, she had no apple in her bag? So much for luring the pony to her desk. Such cute ribbons! Would they be making a bullet? She could use it in gunclub! oh, rockets! She copied down the formula and continued to listen to the lecture, starting a small sketch in the margins of a pony in safety glasses and a lab coat, mixing chemicals. In the cockpit of a mecha.

With Ben's normal anal-retentive attention to detail cranked to about a twelve, it wasn't surprising that his rocket took off without a problem when his experiment was complete.

He had an entire notebook talking about why this sort of fuel was completely antiquated, of course, but he wasn't going to share it with anyone. Sometimes making things explode was just fun.

Priestly took a few moments to boggle at the fact that someone was letting him mess with something very explosive.

As for the gun powder itself, well. Priestly figured it was kind of like cooking -- take your time, follow the recipe carefully, and you could end up with something awesome. And if you didn't, you'd probably get injured horribly somehow. This was Priestly, taking his time and following the recipe very, very, very carefully.

Dinah was being ultra, ultra careful, because no way she'd get to play with weapons again if she blew herself up here. Hair looped up and out of the way, goggles on, very serious. And gleeful. In a quiet, restrained, careful, buttoned-down way.

Jono was going painfully slowly as he ground up the ingredients today, yes. He wasn't in any sort of hurry to blow off more of his body than he already had.

Ino totally gave the Ultra Seriousness Of Everyone Ever an eyeroll and went about her work humming and even bouncing a bit.

But if you were paying attention you'd notice that her hands were completely steady and she followed the directions precisely and accurately.

She totally just did it with flair. Because, dammit, even if she had to be careful she was going to have fun.

Spock efficiently and precisely followed the directions. He'd covered this several years ago in school on Vulcan, but was kind of interesting, really, actually doing this instead of repeating back the memorized information. Theory vs. application, which was what this class was about, wasn't it?

She could do this. Momoko mixed her ingredients, but was it supposed to be so dark? It was 4 parts carbon, right?

As luck would have it, Hobbes had in fact decided to follow Calvin to class today.

Having been privy to the after effects of Calvin's usual brushes with Science! he was looking increasingly worried as the lecture went on.

Jonothon stared as Tyler said that they were going to be working with gunpowder. And then he stared some more.

Huh. By the end of this class, everyone was going to smell like him, then. He certainly couldn't complain, here.
