And that was that, then. No more Halloween decorations, no more eerie sounds playing in the background. No more plotting tricks to take the place of treats in Jonothon's absence of a lower jaw.

And reading to do, for class, because he had been entirely out of sorts on Monday and he had to read up on Buddhism to make up for the utter daze he'd been during Lady Ghanima's lecture.

At least he was in the proper place for it.

//Yeah, I'd never met anyone like me 'til I got here,// Sookie replied, grinning. //Just a bunch of vampires, and it's always neat to meet someone else who can do it. And you weren't even all that secretive about it!//

//I've got better things t'be secretive about,// Jono replied, lifting a shoulder almost awkwardly at that. //This is my voice, luv, so I can't really afford not to use it.//

It wasn't as though he knew sign language, after all. And even if he did, British sign language wouldn't do him a hell of a lot of good in America anyhow.

She nodded thoughtfully, digesting that, and replied (aloud, now), "That makes sense." She wasn't going to ask about the scarf -- she'd just met him, after all. "But people here are so, so nice about stuff like this. I was amazed when I got here."

//Just how easy it is t'be accepted as just like everybody else?// Jono's expression was edging into 'somewhat bemused' territory, now, and he gave a little nod of agreement. //Took me weeks to get used to that, here. But it was enough to convince me to stick around when I realized how easy it is to go back to where I came from. Being able to fit in kind of grows on a person.//

She nodded eagerly. "People back home think I'm crazy for what I can do, 'cause I can never concentrate on anything. Too many thoughts. But people here get that and I love it."

//I think I'd settle for people just thinking I'm crazy,// Jono noted, and just as quickly he was shrugging his shoulders, brushing that thought aside as best as he could. //There are enough people who are different around here, I think people have figured out that if they were to start judging one person for being different, they might as well judge us all. It's remarkable, just how many people have powers, here.//

Magic, mutations, and otherwise.

She nodded. "We got vampires at home, but that's it. I'm the only telepath I'd ever met 'til I got here. It's like a big safety net, here."

//And where I'm from... It's a tough call figurin' out what we don't have, really. Mutants, naturally. People who have gotten powers in other ways, as well. It's all a bit of a muddle, in that sense.//

Really, even if mutants were a minority, it wasn't as though there happened to be a shortage of superheroes-or-villains otherwise.

"I know a couple people here who's homes're like that," she said agreeably. "Are you from England?"

Duh, Sookie.

My, but she was observant!

//I am,// Jono replied amiably, nodding faintly. //And yer from... South, somewhere, I'd imagine. I haven't been in America long enough to pick out one state's accent from th'next, really.//

He had heard... a Kentucky accent, before. And that was about it.

"Louisiana!" she said proudly. "It's pretty easy to tell the states apart once you hear someone from say, Texas or Georgia, too. Though I bet y'all over across the pond have distinguishing accents from region to region."

//Practically neighbourhood to neighbourhood,// Jono agreed, nodding slightly. //Even just within London, yer've got more than just a little variety.//

Jono's was rather East-End, really.
