Sam had enjoyed his break, but he didn't mind being back in the library, surrounded by some of his favorite things. The Halloween decorations made him realize how close the holiday was, and he found himself hoping that nothing too strange happened this year. He could definitely handle a normal, boring holiday for once.

"You can't even tell me you didn't enjoy yourself the last time you got high," Chuck said. "I saw it myself. You were having fun."

"Because I was completely out of my mind," Sam said. "It was embarrassing."

"Oh you were not. You were just less persnickety than usual," Chuck said before taking a bite of the brownie. "Are you sure you made these? Because they aren't half-bad."

"Hey, I'm not bad at desserts," Sam said. "It's just making real food that screws me up sometimes."

"Brownies are real food," Chuck insisted. "And the fact that you can make them without catching them on fire makes you a way better cook than me. Congratulations."

"Maybe if you tried to make them without drugs, you'd be better at it," Sam suggested.

"I think you should try making them with drugs."

"That would require me to buy drugs, and that's not gonna happen," Sam said.

"I'd give them to you for free," Chuck told him. He already gave Andy drugs for free...though he still hadn't figured out why he did that.

"Awww, really?" Sam asked, giving Chuck a fond look before snickering. "No thanks. You'll put them to better use than I will."

Chuck rolled his eyes. "I'm beginning to think you hate fun."

"I had plenty of fun over break," Sam said vaguely. "You and I just don't like the same kinds of fun."

"If your break involved Peter, I don't want to hear about it." He was perfectly happy pretending that douche didn't exist, thank you.

"Don't worry, I'm not going to give you any details," he said. "You can tell me about your break instead."

"I'd really rather not." Because it did not go well.

"What, was it boring?" Sam asked.

"I blackmailed the entire Skull and Bones society," Chuck said. "I own them now."

So that was a "no" on the whole boring thing.

Sam's eyes got a little wide as he stared at Chuck. "Was there a purpose to that, or is that your idea of fun?"

"It started out for fun but then they gave me a reason to not feel bad about doing it," Chuck said easily. "They wanted Nate's head for stuff his father did and I don't really take kindly to people screwing with my friends. So I set them up with hookers and got pictures of them committing several illegal acts. Now they have to do what I say."

"You know, I know I shouldn't think that's awesome, but that's pretty awesome," Sam said. "You can't tell me you're not a good friend now."

"I'm not," Chuck said with a slight frown. "My plan required a casualty and Nate didn't appreciate who I picked. He's not speaking to me anymore."

"Oh," Sam said. "Well, that's just temporary, right? I mean, he'll forgive you."

"Sam, think about all the times I've screwed you over. I haven't even known you for a year," Chuck pointed out. "Nate's known me since since I was two. Imagine what I've done to him over that time. Something has to give at some point and this time he's got some kid from Brooklyn to replace me with."

"If he's known you since you were two, then he should know that this is the sort of thing you do, and shouldn't be surprised or annoyed by it for too long," Sam said. "I can't imagine anyone replacing you, let alone someone from Brooklyn."

"Your optimism makes it extremely difficult for me to pity myself."

"That's kind of the point," Sam said with a smile. "I'm sure Nate will come around. You have that effect on people."

"We'll see," Chuck said, sounding doubtful. "I don't think I'll be visiting New York again for a while though."

Ah, running away. Every Upper East Sider's best friend. Everyone was just lucky he actually stayed in the country this time around. Dragging him back was always such a pain in the ass.

"Oh yeah? Where will you go on breaks then?" Sam asked. "Let me guess, your family has homes away from New York."

"Several of them, yes. And we've got a private jet so I can go wherever I want, whenever I want," Chuck said with a shrug. "But mostly I figure I'd just stick around here."

"I think I'd stick to the private jet," Sam said. "But staying here can be fun too."

"You haven't had the private jet your whole life," Chuck pointed out. "Jet setting gets old if you have to do it alone."

"I've never been on a private jet before," Sam said, playfully hinting.

Chuck rolled his eyes. "I'll whisk you away to Morocco right now. I'm sure Peter would love that."
