DADA for Muggles [Wednesday, October 21, 5th period]

"Hopefully your week off wasn't spent forgetting everything you learned in class," Sirius said with a slightly evil grin, "because today is your midterm."

"That's correct. Don't worry too much -- it's a practical exam," Remus said simply. "Today, we will be assigning pairs. Over the course of the week, the two of you will play Spy vs Spy attempt to disarm one another. Now -- " he added, looking around at the students, "there will be no injuries. Anyone caught hurting another student will be given immediate detention, and that will be the first of your worries. We are looking for disarming alone. Your opponent will declare a surrender to denote your successful disarming. Roughhousing is fine; anyone who uses their powers to give another student any kind of serious injury will be in trouble. And -- " he added quickly, "I do hope you all understand that attacking at the dance is absolutely not sportsmanlike. While a real attack in real life might take place in such an unexpected setting, this isn't a real attack, and I would be very sad if someone's dress was ripped or trousers torn."

"Or the punch bowl disturbed," Sirius added. "And we aren't going to be held accountable for what happens if you accidentally attack an alumni who looks like your target from the back. Today's lesson is for information gathering. Talk to the other students and learn your opponent's strengths and weaknesses. If you have powers, you are absolutely allowed to use them since fights in the real world are seldom even, but as Professor Lupin mentioned, use discretion. Listen carefully to the list as I read them," he said, reaching for a piece of parchment:

Alex Karev v. Francine Peters
Andy Gallagher v. Didi
Annja Creed v. Diana Hansen
Blysse Norwood v. Edmund Pevensie
Dinah Lance v. Alice Liddell
Elizabeth Stonem v. George Cooper
George Sands v. Jack Burton
Jenny Sparks v. Merlin
Jo Harvelle v. Priestly
Momoko Akatsutsumi v. Eleanor Robinson
Sam Winchester v. Griffin O'Conner

Oh, this was a horrible idea for all of England. But Merlin was there. Waiting for the whole... questioning bit.

"How about we don't and say we did?"

Jenny had an...interesting idea of interrogation, yes. But if Merlin even halfway lived up to the legends, there was no way them fighting could logically end except with the dorm a smoking crater with the two of them standing in the middle looking very guilty indeed.

"Works for me!" Merlin replied with a relieved sigh.

Dorm? Possibly the island.

'Dorm' had been a conservative estimate. Perhaps they could be transported to the Isle of Ikea to have it out, but reasonably priced Scandinavian flatpack furniture had never done anything to Jenny (except that one time...). "We could meet for tea?" What? They were both British!

Merlin smiled at that, nodding again. "Tea sounds lovely."

See, the English could settle things over a nice cup of tea.

Dinah was doodling on her paper, frowning and thinking, and considering courses of action. Memories of Azula going ballistic at her when dunked in water made her think she really, really needed to talk to Alice. Yeah.

"How exactly do we imagine they're defining injuries?" Alice asked, sounding cheerful. "Bruises and sprains, or do they mean they'd rather no one removes any limbs? That would be the most efficient manner of dis-arming, but I doubt they were intending to be so very literal."

Dinah blinked at Alice's comment, then smiled a little and said, "Yeah, it would, but it'd definitely get us Detention. Um. I have no problems with bruising? Or even spraining. But." She frowned. "That wouldn't turn off my telekinesis. Unless I just don't use it, I guess. But that's not the point of the assignment." She tilted her head, thinking of Azula. "You'd be okay with the spraining and bruising? Or being picked up with TK? Or not?"

"Quite," Alice said, raising an eyebrow. "That's the point of the assignment, isn't it? I suggest we dispense with the niceties entirely. Fight until one of us concedes, and we patch ourselves up as best we can and lie about the source of the injuries. You use your powers, I use my knives, and we have a real fight instead of this nonsense about disarming."

Dinah stared at Alice for a long minute. "...yeeeah, no." She paused. "Not for a class assignment. There's no win there. I'm guessing you won't stop until one of us is unconscious."

Francine would just be sitting here trying to wrap her mind around the concept of anybody besides Robin the muppet frog not being able to disarm her, let alone a reasonably large boy type person.

Oh yeah, and answering questions, she supposed, if anybody had any.

If you were a George-shaped person, you'd likely be glared at. Anyone else would get his WTF face.

Diana glanced around, looking for Annja.

Alex didn't really feel the need to interrogate anyone about this but whatever, he'd stick around in case he got the urge.

Didi was perfectly willing to interrogate Andy, or to be interrogated by someone else. Whatever came first.

Andy eyed Didi, wondering if suggesting she surrender to him now in class would be frowned upon by the teachers.

Didi eyed him right back, then rose from her seat to wander toward him, hands casually in her pockets. "Andy, right? Hi."

"Hi," Andy replied, giving her a small smile. "Look, I'm really not into fighting all that much..."

"Me either," Didi answered. "I mean, unless I have to, and this is just a class."

Sam was still trying to decide whether or not to be nice to Griff, so a little interrogation could help.

"So, are we spilling our secrets or just staring and hoping the other pays no attention to their surroundings for a week?" Griff asked, taking a seat by his new faux foe.

"If you don't want to spill your secrets, I'm good with working with the element of surprise," Sam said. "It could be more fun that way."

"That works for me," Griff agreed, looking up at Sam because wow, height differences showed all the time when you were 5'7" next to a giant. "You don't look like you'd surprise easy."

Momoko looked about and waited for Eleanor, still trying to decide if she should tell about the whole transforming into Blossom part. Would that be considered cheating, though?
