Cyborg Theory Class

Welcome back to Cyborg Theory.

Last week’s class was very successful as you all tried to work out the warning signs of the true identity of a human-form robot.

Today, you have all been informed that Anakin, Kawalsky, Cally, Lee and Aeryn are human-form robots. What are your varying reactions to this news? How would you react to discover that your close friend, acquaintance, classmate and/or that person over there, omg, was not, in fact, human?

I have places for you to comment with your general reactions, if you have any, and specific reactions.

And for the faux-robots in the class, what would be your reaction to (a) discovering that people know, (b) the reactions of your loved ones to this news.

Please show me both your first knee-jerk reaction and a more thoughtful analysis.

//Also, remember that your papers on this exercise are due on Wednesday. I will get them back to you and your grade for the class so far next Monday.//

Remember that participation is mandatory in this class!!1!

John takes a shot. "Well, this might...hurt me a little bit. It'd feel maybe like a betrayal? I gave her all my emotions and thoughts, she might've returned them with words but how am I to know she really meant them if she wasn't human?"

Not less, Professor. But, it would be weird to know that she might not capable of emotion or her emotions might be just programs. I think it would take quite a lot of adjusting to but she would never be less then human. And, you know, if she tried to kill me, things might get sticky.

I think the evil I could probably adapt to, it's the killing of me that might take some time to work out. No matter how much I love someone, them trying to kill me would throw a wrench in our plans.

*shifts uncomfortably*

Don't know if I could kill Aeryn, evil or not. It...I don't know if I'm strong enough do that to someone I love.

Never! Unless it's all out of my hands. In which case we're all frelled. Sorry.

Beka's mouth twists. "Aeryn...I don't know if I'd even be surprised. Except the evil part."

John frowns. "It wouldn't surprise you? Mind if I ask why though I do agree on the evil part."

Beka smiles, shrugging. "Nothing bad. She doesn't like her emotions very much. Seems like a robot trait."

John nods back and taps his chin. "Well, why I can agree that emotional aloofness might be a robot trait, Aeryn's more of what I would consider a private person, willing to show emotion around those she trusts explicitly. And I don't think it's that she doesn't like her emotions, it's that she's still adapting to them." John smiles. "Assumptions are sometimes wrong, after all."

Beka looks vaguely discomfited. "Actually...that wasn't a criticism. I admire her ability to keep her emotions private. Wish I could do it better."

John smiles and nods. "Sorry, then. Subject close to my heart and all. Tends to get my defenses up. I can't do it either. I let it all hang out."

"On a completely random note, I finished up two posters for Journalism class homework. Celine Dion, here I come."

"I like Aeryn. Respect the hell out of her. Sorry it came out wrong." Beka smiles. "Letting it all hang out isn't the worst thing. Just gets embarrassing sometimes especially when there's Shakespeare involved."

"You totally rock. Need help with slogans?"

"And with robots, it's not so much an emotional aloofness as the fact that the robot doesn't understand emotion, doesn't comprehend human frailty. Because they don't make sense. In the logic of a robot, there is no place for the irrational, because they usually haven't been programmed to expect the illogical."

"Aeryn couldn't be more unlike that. Aeryn understands honor, and sacrifice, and nobility. A robot would not."

Sam shakes her head. "I would find it very difficult to believe Aeryn Sun was a robot. There would need to be a lot of substantiated proof."

Oh, this was going to hurt. A lot. "I probably wouldn't be able to abandon her. Because she is my friend because of who she is, not what she is. If I suddenly found out she was trying to recruit her brethren to infest and demolish the Earth, however, I might have to reconsider."

"Not robot. Soldier," Aeryn corrects. "Slight difference."

"Either way, like I told John, I admire it," Beka replies. "It makes you strong."

Aeryn nods. She can accept that.
