Ethics [Thursday, October 1, 1st period]

When the Ethics class arrived in the Danger Shop, they stepped into an entirely different world.

An incredibly dry, hot one. That smelled really bad.

Anakin waved his hand around the room. "Welcome to the embodiment of gluttony," he said, "the palace of a Hutt."

He concentrated on the controls on the far side of the room, and the simulation sprung to life: dozens of beings drinking, eating, and dancing, with all activity centered around a vile slug of a beast laying on the raised dais at the front of the room.

In a place of honor on the wall was a man, face twisted in a silent scream but his features obscured beyond recognition, encased in silver. Anakin ignored it as he walked past to point at the creature on the dais. "That," he said, nose wrinkling in disgust, "is a Hutt. This particular version was named Jabba, one of the most powerful crime lords in the galaxy." A grim smile turned the corners of his mouth up. "At least until he met my children."

He shook his head. "That is neither here nor there. Today is an interactive experience for you, class. Take a good hard look around. See the effects that gluttony can have."

His eyes went flat. "Touch any of the dancing girls and you'll regret it. That's a promise."

Explore Jabba's Palace!

Pair up with another student or wander around on your own! Listen to the band, chat up a bounty hunter or two, try a tasty live snack, go look at the guy on the wall. Anakin's dead serious about the dancing girls, though. You try to put the moves on one and he'll drop you in detention. And then he'll start to get upset.

He has a Thing about slavery.

Raven had little interest in Jabba or the drinking or dancing, though the display of blatant gluttony sent a strange shiver down her spine. She was, however, drawn to the man on the wall. Laying her hand upon the substance that coated him, she wondered what had happened to him.

"...Anyone else want a sandwich?" Hayley said, walking up to look at the display as well. "Or a hot dog. Hot dog sandwich?"

She shook her head. "That's just crazy."

"How can you think of food in a place like this?" Raven said. She skimmed her hand over the silvery substance. The man seemed to be intact, from what she could see, and appeared to be human -- two of everything there was supposed to be two of, and one of those that there were not.

"Well, not gonna eat anything here," Hayley said. "The floors are kind of dirty. Can you imagine the kitchen?"

Yes, Hayley. That's the real issue.

The look on Katchoo's face as she wandered around was . . . "distasteful" didn't begin to cover it. Put all the strange beings into human shapes, swap out the horrible smell for the reek of alcohol and illicit substances, and it was almost exactly like one of Darcy's parties. Even the guy on the wall -- that had been the same, in spirit, as the rolls of film they'd used to take of high-profile figures in flagrante delicto.

No way in hell was she going to screw with one of the dancing girls, but if anyone else tried . . . they were just lucky she was two days from getting shot in the liver and not about to hurt them.

Raven caught sight of Katchoo and remembered her promise to Merlin. She approached the other girl and greeted her. "Good morning, Katchoo," she said. "Are you well?" At the same time, she reached out with her empathy to ascertain Katchoo's condition.

"Don't call me --" Katchoo began defensively, but she didn't have the heart for it today. Physically, she felt fine, although still a bit weak from the blood loss she'd suffered. "I'm okay. Why?"

"I am sorry, I did not realize I was not supposed to call you that," Raven said. "What name would you prefer?" Whatever healing Merlin had done seemed to have worked, though she sensed Katchoo's weakness.

"Merlin told you had been wounded," she said. "He wished me to check on you."

Francine tried exploring around by herself for a bit conveniently timed to miss Raven but there were limits to her sloooooowly-developing bravery, and this place was way past them.

"Eww. Eww eww eww eww eww." That was in response to the ....thing.... that had just tried to slip a tentacle over her shoulder and down her blouse. She knew they were only holograms, but "EWW."

"HEY," Katchoo snapped at the hologram she'd just mentally renamed after what's his name, that one CEO's kid from Arkansas who'd been such a little sleazeball. "Tentacles off, pal!"

It clicked and whirred and slurped at her. With attitude, somehow. But it did slowly slither the tentacle off of Francine, though not without a stop in her hair.

"Eww eww eww eww eww!" Unoriginal, but it worked, so she was going to stick with it. "If he wanted to teach us about gluttony, why not a candy factory or something? I wouldn't want to touch any of this."

Bobby was looking around curiously (and really really glad the dryness in the air was synthetic because ugh). Personally he thought this Jabba guy and the Blob would have gotten along great.

And okay, the bratty part of him was totally wondering what would happen if he tried to like, shake a dancing girl's hand.

Karla wandered around, getting more and more upset. This place looked like a cross between the 'parties' the Ruling Council liked to put on and a Red Moon House after they came to power. There was fear here. And pleasure twisted by enjoying the pain of others. And a haunted, harried desperation. The emotions were so powerful that they threatened to overcome the reek of the palace itself.

...Or maybe it was just her, projecting what she fled from onto the scene in front of her.

Tara found herself near Karla. Usually the other girl's strength was comforting, but today she looked as overwhelmed and young as Tara felt.

"I never want to be in a place like this," she confided in a thick voice. "Ever."

"I have been," Karla said, stony-faced and staring at a dancing girl. "And I never wanted to be back."

...And then realized she'd actually spoken aloud. "Oh, uhh, I mean--well, you know."

Even though Jonas knew they were still on the island and he was still safe, he found himself trying to look as small and as unobtrusive as possible. A trip to an island to get an education was one thing but this place was loud, messy and completely over his head.

The people looked extraordinarily different to the point Jonas found himself staring a few times and had to tear his eyes away and stare at his shoes to get himself back under control. He was completely out of his element, completely overwhelmed and he found that feeling wasn't fun at all.

Angela didn't really want to look around, because ew, and she really didn't want to touch anything. Even if it was a simulation, she wanted to disinfect her shoes just for being on this floor and OH DEAR GOD SHE JUST SAW WHAT THE HUTT REALLY LOOKED LIKE.

This was - ew. Rose was looking around, but she really didn't want to see anything too up close in case she lost the very tight rein she had on her temper and tried to punch a simulation.

Morgana was not going to touch anything. Morgana was not going to eat anything. Morgana was simply going to stare and pray that she never, ever ended up in a place like this for any transgressions she might commit in life.

Azula looked around, detached. She never really saw anything as bad as this but she suspected there were some areas in the more lawless parts of the Earth Kingdom.

If the Fire Nation conquered the whole of the Earth Kingdom, this place would be the first to disappear.

Yuffie looked around and made a face, even as she ordered a drink. It reminded her a little too much of a few places back home.
