301--Family Unit Continues

OK, gang, here's the deal. Today we're talking about family again, both blood and created. I want to talk about both functional and dysfunctional.

[She purses her lips together and leans forward on her lectern]

How do we communicate our feelings? Not love, not nurture, not caring...How do we as people access and communicate the real feelings of family? Possesivness? Defense? A huge part of family is feelings of ownership and belonging. How do we communicate this, and what happens when it's interrupted?

"I agree. It's cliche, but actions do speak louder than words. And sometimes people can subconsciously start to react physically to situations before they mentally realize they even have an issue with someone."

"Good point," D'anna nods. "A person's body-language often betrays his or her state of mind. The better you know that person, the more a movement, expression, or action reveals."

Do you think that? Or do you find with intimacy comes a certain amount of inattention...you should read the body, but you don't?

Her brow wrinkled in concentration. "Say someone you were close with was known as a non-smoker and you happened upon him or her having a cig. To a random stranger, that person is just another smoker taking a break to indulge in a bad habit, but to you, it's a clear sign of distress or trouble." She bites her bottom lip another moment, "I'm not sure about the inattention, Miss. I guess familiarity could breed a certain amount of... 'tolerance' to another's physical indicators?"

Don't say it like a question, D'anna. You're exactly right. Familiarity breeds tolerance, which can become inattention. This is often manifested in divorce. Do you want to add anything else?

"Yes, Miss, I'll try to remember that." Brow still wrinkled wow she's gonna need botox someday, D'anna cocked her head to the side. "So, inattention is the first sign that there's been a breakdown in communication, thus signaling dysfunction in the unit as a whole?" She asked, sincerely curious.

Inattention and taking others for granted is...well, it's only my opinion, but yes. Those are big contributers to dysfunction. They devalue the person and the relationship...often to the breaking point.

D'anna nods thoughtfully, jots something down in her notebook, then gives CJ a small smile. "Thank you, Miss."
