How to Win Friends and Influence People, Friday Period 4

"Good afternoon, good afternoon, please don't forget about the snacks," Glinda said as everyone came in, while gesturing to a plate of chocolate-peanut butter fudge and carafes of hot chocolate. "Today we're going over the six ways to make people like you." She began passing the stack of handouts around. "While you're looking at that, I'd like you to start thinking about what you could do more often. Today, I want you to pair up with someone in the class who you haven't had the opportunity to meet or talk to yet, or someone who you don't know particularly well. Try to use the six ways Mr. Carnegie laid out, and we'll regroup and see how they work."

Illyria was fairly certain that No did not fit within the rules listed on the sheet, though she checked three times just to make sure.

"There are few in this class I haven't spoken with at least once, so it would seem appropriate." That was friendly, right?

"That sounds logical to me," Eleanor replied and took a seat nearby. "Have you looked over the handout material yet?"

"I have. It seems to vary between ridiculous and servile."

"Well..." Eleanor glanced at her own paper. It didn't seem that bad, but maybe to some it did. "I can see how you might see that, but for some of these, I think they may actually work. Smiling, certainly. And for the 'talk of the man's interest'..." she trailed off and shook her head. "I would hope it assumes all people, not just a man."

"Perhaps the writer believed women were not so easily gulled as men."

"That could be," she acknowledged. "It certainly sounds better than the woman's interests being subservient to the man's." Which is how Eleanor first interpreted it.

Illyria wasn't utterly unaware of the history she'd missed, though much of that was buried in memories she didn't usually care to rummage through. "That does seem the more likely, given the time in which it was written."

"Why is it always the men?" she muttered. She didn't particularly worry that they were getting off-topic here. It just galled her to think of the disparity of it all.

"Human males tend to be larger and stronger than the females; diplomacy isn't necessary where force will suffice."

Illyria didn't really have any loyalties to either side, no. Or think like a human.

"Physical ability doesn't always count for everything," Eleanor replied. "And often men and their force cause more problems than they solve."

"Neither of these is untrue," Illyria agreed. "But these rules were written by a man."

"Yes," she said with a sigh, "they were." She glanced at the handout. "Do you really want to try this?"

"No." There was something in there about being sincere, right? "Do you?" And also about asking questions.

She glanced down at the paper and looked back up, shaking her head. "Not really. It's rather lost its appeal."
