This week as the students settled in for class, they'd find Aeryn passing out printed photos down the rows for everyone to see.

"The photos you are seeing right now are all animals. Specifically, animals my husband was turned into while he was a student here," she explained. They weren't the actual photos of John himself, but rather generic photos of animals, because she wasn't that cruel. ~~And because finding out which pictures Aeryn actually has? A liiiiiiiittle too much work on a Monday night.~~ "Welcome to the wonderful world of animal transformation. A long time ago, a student turning into a bunny randomly was a novelty. Now it seems to happen pretty frequently. This being our third week, this may have already happened to some of you. If it has, please feel free to share your experience. Why does it happen? I have no idea. I don't think anyone does. Do you get to decide what you turn into? It doesn't seem to be that way, no. In the case of the photos being passed around, he was transformed weekly because he provoked a teacher who was a witch. I don't think that gets to happen these days, even if someone wanted to do that." She had no idea if this was true, but thought it might make them feel better. "Mostly it just seems to happen at random. You will return to normal, in due time. Just wait it out."

Aeryn had never been an animal. This was all very easy for her to say.

"Also, from what I understand, there may be some nudity involved when you change back. My advice is to keep to areas where you can easily access clothes ~~though we all know it will happen at the time that will provide the most awkwardness anyway~~. Try not to be too embarrassed. It will likely happen to everyone at some point." Except her. La.

She reached behind her desk to pull out two large carriers, setting them on the top of the desk. "You also may have to care for a loved one or friend who has turned into an animal, in which case you are probably stuck dealing with them until they change back. That person should really owe you a few favors. For the duration of this class period, you will be caring for animals. These are kittens, which I understand to be baby cats, and therefore one of the most difficult animals to keep track of because they do not care about you. Take one, keep it with you and safe for the rest of class, and return it at the bell. Also, should you be allergic, I have allergy medication here. Take two and deal with it."

Beka chuckled, playing with her kitten while it tried to climb up her shoulder. "That'll only work if it suits it to stay there."

"I think it flaming hates me," Mat said with a self-conscious little chuckle. "It can do whatever pleases it."

"I doubt that," Beka said thoughtfully, trying to disentangle the kittens' claws from her top. "It probably only despises you."

"That is very bloody reassuring," Mat said. "How can you tell?"

"Cats can't be bothered to hate humans," she said seriously, but she was smiling just a little.

Pounce made a soft noise and trudged off in pursuit of the escaped kitten.

"Oh, I see," Mat said, laughing. "It has more bloody important things to do. Bet that tune would change really quickly come dinner."

She shook her head. "They just know how to play you so you can't resist."

"I'm sure I can," Mat assured her. "I'm going to have scratches--and not the flaming fun kind--on my legs for days."

"I'm certain you've gotten through worse," she said lightly, remembering his mention of prison.

Twas then that Pounce returned, carrying Mat's kitten by the scruff of its neck. It seemed like the kitten hadn't had much of a say in the matter and Pounce dropped it right in front of Mat's feet.

"Welcome back," Mat told the kitten, crouching down. "Have you decided to be friends now?"

The kitten gave him a look of supreme disdain.

Beka bit her lip, hiding her smile. "Do all animals respond to you like this or only this one?"

"Just this one," Mat replied with a frown. "I have a horse in the stables who likes me fine."

Her eyes widened a little. She had all the potential to gather a zoo around her, but horses she couldn't get along with.

"Mayhap with some milk," she mused, letting her own kitten bite in her fingers.

"For the kitten or me?" he teased.

"You could drink it," she said, wrinkling her nose. "Don't complain if he likes you less, though."

"You think it's possible he could like me less?" Mat asked.

"You're not scratched up yet," she reasoned. "And that'd mean nothing either."

"Think there's a chance I'm going to leave the classroom not bleeding?" Mat asked.

"As long as you don't get Pounce mad," she chuckled, wriggling her finger in front of her kitten. It instantly batted at it. "I don't think they're capable of mauling you just yet."

"Good," Mat said, feigning relief. "I get by solely on my looks."

"At least you admit to it," she teased him back. Not that she believed him.

"You could, too," he said gallantly. "You have lovely eyes."

It was reflex how she ducked her head. "Most find them unsettling," she said. Especially when she got angry.

"I'm not most people," he said, giving her another smile and trying to put her back at ease.

It wasn't him really, she just was shy. "Did you try telling your kitten that?" she asked him lightly.
