Detention, Saturday

"Hey," Mitchell called, once the handwavey detention announcement had gone out and everyone had had time to gather up by the Danger Shop. "I'm Mitchell. Some of you might've met me." He grinned. "You're here because for whatever reason, the school has chosen to recognise your trespasses. That doesn't mean it has to be horrible, just unpleasant."

Another slight grin, with only a hint of apology.

"So today, we're going to be preparing for a tea party," he continued, "Although I'd like it if you'd all go light on the tea. I'm more of a coffee person."

He shouldn't be allowed free range of children.

"Just enter through there and get your finest," he said, waving at the doorway, "And I'll see you on the other end."

"At the airport. When you had the magazine," he said, making a faint gesture. "I had to argue the bloody customs clod for fifteen minutes before he stopped manhandling it."

"Oh! Right," Jack said. "They're ridiculous about weapons these days."

Not that he carried anything more lethal than a pocketknife, but he ... wasn't Arthur.

"It's that apparently bandits can't board planes in mid-air," Arthur muttered, "Or I'd call it negligent." A pause. "Do you know any local gossip at all, if it'll get us out of here quicker?"

"You read it all every week," Jack pointed out, and thought. What had Dinah been going on about lately?

"Tony was a tiger. My new little brother isn't a total waste of time. Dinah turned herself into a cat and ate crickets. The play auditions were last week. I'm a bit shy on rumors, I'm afraid."

... he needed to fix that.

"Of course she did," Arthur said, rubbing his brow. "I swear she's got the sense of self-preservation of an insane badger."

Jack did not have a strong disagreement, no. "The island likes to do enough to us," he said wearily. "I'm content to let the inevitable happen without courting it. I'm not convinced no one's ever gotten stuck, either."
