Detention, Saturday

[chosehumanity]

"Hey," Mitchell called, once the handwavey detention announcement had gone out and everyone had had time to gather up by the Danger Shop. "I'm Mitchell. Some of you might've met me." He grinned. "You're here because for whatever reason, the school has chosen to recognise your trespasses. That doesn't mean it has to be horrible, just unpleasant."

Another slight grin, with only a hint of apology.

"So today, we're going to be preparing for a tea party," he continued, "Although I'd like it if you'd all go light on the tea. I'm more of a coffee person."

He shouldn't be allowed free range of children.

"Just enter through there and get your finest," he said, waving at the doorway, "And I'll see you on the other end."

"It's a good song," Jack agreed, though the explanation as a whole made less than no sense to him. "But if it's the only one he has that you like, it won't be any problem to turn it down once it's over, will it? It isn't as if you'd be missing anything."

"He has a couple, it's just hard to root out," Gilbert muttered, getting up to go for the cupboard with all the CDs in it. "Coldplay? Kill me, I beg you."

"I don't know them," Jack said, edging toward the CD player. Maybe if he kept the man busy in the cupboard, he could turn the volume down himself. "A bit behind the times, I'm afraid. They're evil?"

"Rip-offs and sell-outs," Gilbert said, rifling through the cupboard, and utterly, utterly oblivious to anything Jack was doing. It took effort caring this little. "Everything's been heading down the loo since the 80s."

"I'm sure it has," Jack said, clucking his tongue a little. "Modern times. Nothing interesting about them at all."

The volume was slowly edging down as Jack talked. He tried to sync it with the fade of the song so it wouldn't be too noticable.

"I was lucky to die when I did, really," he said, yanking out a Bauhaus record and giving it the one-over. "Like being born post-humously." Someone read too much Nietsche, "Except in reverse."

"Sorry," Jack said, as the music faded out to a whisper. "I don't entirely follow. You're dead?"

"I'm a ghost," Gilbert said, waving that off. Then pausing.

And squinting at Jack. Wait, what had happened just now?

"I should have guessed," Jack said -- because, really, why not -- and smiled.

And sidled off toward the kitchen. It was ... a bit of a fast sidle.
