Detention, Saturday

"Hey," Mitchell called, once the ~~handwavey~~ detention announcement had gone out and everyone had had time to gather up by the Danger Shop. "I'm Mitchell. Some of you might've met me." He grinned. "You're here because for whatever reason, the school has chosen to recognise your trespasses. That doesn't mean it has to be horrible, just unpleasant."

Another slight grin, with only a hint of apology.

"So today, we're going to be preparing for a tea party," he continued, "Although I'd like it if you'd all go light on the tea. I'm more of a coffee person."

He shouldn't be allowed free range of children.

"Just enter through there and get your finest," he said, waving at the doorway, "And I'll see you on the other end."

"There is nothing interesting about physical illness," Jack declared as he read his card.

//Nothing even remotely,// Jono agreed, looking very much the part of the guy in the room today who Should Know. //Who came up with this sodding subject matter, anyhow?//

Jack was getting the idea Jono Should Know, yes.

... he was privately betting on leprosy being beneath the bandages.

"It has to be our esteemed professor, doesn't it?"

//It's in poor bloody taste, if yer ask me.// Which... nobody was. But he was going to have Words anyhow, yes. //Interesting physical sodding illness. Honestly. Because everybody clearly wants to discuss that rubbish over afternoon tea.//

"Old ladies like to," Jack volunteered. "But my back is fine and I'm nowhere near the change of life, so I don't have any complaints on the score anyhow."

He added more sugar to his tea. "Which card did you get again?"

//Competitive horseriding,// Jono replied, giving a look at his card that suggested that he was probably quite thoroughly scowling at it. Possibly just in his head. //What I know about horses can be summed up beginning to end with 'they have four legs and hooves.'//

"The races aren't a bad way to spend an afternoon," Jack said. "At least, not if you have a good tip sheet to stop you losing all your money. You haven't been?"

He knew the difference between dressage and races, but didn't care. Dressage was boring.

//I'm more inclined to find a quiet place to play my guitar.// Jono shrugged. //I haven't been to the races before, no. And I usually move along past them when they're on the telly, too.//

"There's no point watching them on television," Jack said, making a face. "If you aren't betting, it's just watching animals run. At home you could see what ridiculous clothes people would wear, but no one ever dresses up anymore..."

//Dressing up to see the horses run?// That sounded interesting, at least. //Yer realize, now I have to ask yer where 'home' is.//

"Oh, sorry. It's 1899 at home. I'm from ... well, I've lived all over, but I was in Spain before we came to New Amsterdam." A pause. "Where is your home?"

Huh. Poor bloke was more than just a little displaced, wasn't he? Jono wore an almost sympathetic expression for a moment before he replied.

//London. Year of 1995. Just recently moved Stateside, to Massachusetts, but there isn't anything in particular that's keeping me there at the moment, and so here I am. Can't imagine making a jump quite like the one yer did, though.//

"I haven't minded it so much," Jack said. "I like some of the technology, I can ignore the rest, and the culture's much easier. But this is after four months."

"I spent some time in London," he added. "When I was grade school-aged, I mean." The accent probably suggested as much.

//And how did yer like it?// London then was a far cry from Jonothon's London, he knew that much. But he couldn't stomp down the curiosity, and so, naturally, he had to ask.

Home was home, after all.

"I'd been in Budapest, but it was still so much larger," Jack said slowly. "Noisier. And I was learning English, so a lot of it flew right over my head until things started to fit together."

//Little overwhelming?// Jono considered for a moment, and then he nodded. //I can sympathize. It did get easier for yer, at least?//

Well, once he was over his childhood enough to talk at all...

"Much," Jack said dutifully, and gave Jono a wry look. "Your countrymen were mostly very kind, if that's what you're wondering. And it made coming here infinitely easier."

//I imagine any run-in with the overwhelming or the extraordinary would be good practise for ending up in a place like this one,// Jonothon pointed out, not unpleasantly. //Fandom has thus far proved to be a bit... unique.//

A pause.

//People are rather accepting of differences in others, here.//

"Nothing interesting about Vin Diesel, either," Effy noted.

Well, nothing she found interesting, lets put it that way.

"Is that a person?" Jack wondered aloud. The phrase was ... vaguely familiar.

"Actor," she confirmed. "Maybe he does other stuff." She honestly didn't care enough to find out, and never thought she'd need to know.

"Think talking about what we don't know about him counts?"

Jack laughed. "Why not? For example, I do not know for sure that he doesn't eat babies."

"Should start a rumour on the internet." Because everyone believed what they read online, for some dumbshit reason.

Jack ... took a moment to appreciate that idea. "How would we get people to believe it?"

"We've got a reliable source." So what if they didn't, couldn't prove anything on the internet. "And no proof otherwise."
