Language Classes, Monday, Oct. 17

Hello.

I hope you enjoyed the movies on Friday. It's nice to have some diversion before the weekend.

Today, we are resuming our lessons from Wednesday.

Classics Students: You have a quiz on Hebrew today. The quiz consists of 15 vocabulary questions, a passage to translate, and a two-minute conversation with me in Hebrew. Approach me at my desk when you are ready for our conversation to begin.

Languages of Asia:We are continuing our work on Cantonese Chinese. Please review this audiotape and write a brief script using structures from it and your worksheet on Wednesday.

Draco signs in and takes the test. He passes was ease.

Sonia signs in, and looks for a spare seat. She looks less tired than before (http://www.livejournal.com/users/soniabelmont/4686.html), but there are still remnants of dark circles under her eyes. Beethoven is still close behind her, looking as surly as ever.

She does pretty well on the test, but is a bit worried about the conversational portion, and timidly approaches Dream's desk.

Beethoven follows Sonia into the classroom, and gives Professor Dream a quick bow. He eyes the man's hairstyle approvingly.

After nodding to Beethoven, Dream greets Sonia in Ancient Hebrew.

//Hello, Miss Belmont. How are you today?//

Sonia smiles, though a little nervously, and responds to Dream.

//I'm find, thank you, but a little tired. How are you?//

She may have used an informal greeting when responding to Dream, though she can't remember later.

Noticing her nerves, Dream tries to put Sonia at ease.

//I am well.

What did you do this weekend?//

Sonia relaxes a bit, breathing deep before answering. She's studied, she can do this.

//That is good to hear. This weekend, I worked at Professor Chaucer's store in the town, and showed Mr. Beethoven around the school.//

//Is Mr. Beethoven your guardian?//

//No; actually, I am looking out for him. Mr. Beethoven was a guest in our Music class, and he didn't want to go home immediately.//

//Ah. He is far from home.

A pause, then:

You are too, I believe.//

She nods.

//Yes, he is.//

Her next response is quieter, and she ducks her head.

//And so am I.//

//I understand that.//

[long pause]

//Do you have any questions for me?//

//Not just now, sir. Thank you, sir.//

Dream beckons Draco to his desk, speaking in Ancient Hebrew.

//Mr. Malfoy. How are you today?//

Draco walks over to Dream's desk.

//Very well sir. And yourself?//

//I am as I am.

What did you do this weekend?//

Draco didn't like all the cryptic talk. He tried to think of a way to make his weekend seem cryptic but he couldn't.

//I pretty much kept to myself sir. I read a lot in my room.//

Oh he sounded so pathetic. He's glad this was just a teacher and not one of the students.

Dream notices Draco's discomfort, but doesn't respond to it.

//What did you read?//

//Just some books from my old school...//

He stops because he isn't sure how to say Hogwarts in Hebrew.

//...I'm just trying to keep my magical skills sharp.//

//I did not know you studied magic.

Do you enjoy it?//

//I suppose I do. It's been around me all my life so it's second nature.//

//We do adapt to what is around us.

Your vocabulary is very good, Mr. Malfoy. Thank you for taking the time to talk with me. Do you have any questions? //

//I don't have any questions. Thank you sir.//

*switching to English*

I'll see you on Wednesday.
