Language Classes, Monday, Oct. 17

Hello.

I hope you enjoyed the movies on Friday. It's nice to have some diversion before the weekend.

Today, we are resuming our lessons from Wednesday.

Classics Students: You have a quiz on Hebrew today. The quiz consists of 15 vocabulary questions, a passage to translate, and a two-minute conversation with me in Hebrew. Approach me at my desk when you are ready for our conversation to begin.

Languages of Asia:We are continuing our work on Cantonese Chinese. Please review this audiotape and write a brief script using structures from it and your worksheet on Wednesday.

Sam signs in. She looks even more exhausted than last weekend and, if you look closely, you may notice that her eyes are a little red from weeping.

She takes the quiz and just barely passes it.

Sam is startled by the question. She had forgotten that she was supposed to meet with the Professor. "Today would be fine, sir."

Sam struggles with some of the verbs, but otherwise is able to understand Dream. Her reply (also in Ancient Hebrew) is much less coherent. "I...had bad talk with friend (http://www.livejournal.com/users/apocalypsesoon/7407.html) night last. I get many dreams evil. Unconnected."

"Thank you. No, keep them. Please."

Sam switches to English. "You're welcome, sir. Thank you for asking."

Janet waves blearily at Sam as she walks in.

Then she sneezes. And sneezes again.

Janet sniffles and blows her nose as she slumps into the desk next to Sam's. "Allergies," she mouths before Sam can ask.

Sam waves back and digs in her messenger back for a tissue, handing it to Janet with a sympathetic look. She also offers her a candy and chocolate covered espresso bean.

Janet takes the tissue and blows her nose, but moves her backpack to reveal a giant box of them on her desk. She holds up an identical package of candy and chocolate covered espresso beans with a wry grin, then reaches into her backpack and holds up a tin of caffeinated chocolate mints.

She resists the urge to rub her eyes. It would only make the itching go straight from 'bad' to 'unbearable.'

Sam opens her mouth a little to show Janet the candy already on her tongue, careful not to let it fall onto the floor.

She begins to think of ways to properly repay Jack.

Janet really regrets being too sick right now to properly think of all the possibilities here. She grins at Sam and pops another candy and chocolate-covered espresso bean in her mouth.

Today may well be a whole lot of fun.

Sam, not wanting to dwell on all the possibilities be accused of cheating, smiles at Janet, but then turns her head back to her test paper.
