Multicultural Fair! [The Gym - After Classes]

The benefit of doing something like this for the second time meant that Joan and Turtle had a much easier time of setting things up since they knew what worked and what didn't.

Turtle had, once again, provided decorations from Turtle & Canary. There was the requisite refreshment table, though it was primarily there to provide beverages, since most of the booths featured culturally appropriate food.

After set up was complete, Joan and Turtle sat down to catch up while they waited for the fair to begin.

Valentine arched an eyebrow, and took a second to look the guy up and down.

"And what do they put in those cookies? Because there's no way you could exist on a diet of only these cookies and not look like Dukes."

Pause.

"He's the very, very massive phsy ed teacher, in case you were wondering. Can't miss him."

"Oh, the usual," Mat lied easily. "Carrots, spinach, mutton. I also exercise frequently."

"I think," Valentine said with a grin, "you'll be very surprised by these cookies, then." She held out her uneaten one for him to take. "I'll even sacrifice the last one just so you can have the experience."

"How can I ever repay you for this great gift?" Mat asked, taking the cookie.

"Please," Valentine held out a hand. "Consider it charity."

Mat leaned forward to kiss the hand anyway. "You're all heart," he replied. "Would I also be privileged enough to hear a name to go with such greatness?"

He was laying it on thick and thoroughly enjoying it.

Well. That was not at all what Valentine intended when she put out her hand, and she had to admit, it caused her to blink a moment in a very rare moment of genuine surprise that actually surfaced.

"Valentine," she said, her voice dripping with the irony involved in following up 'all heart' with that. "Valentine Wiggin. What's yours?"

"Mat Cauthon," he said, grinning. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Valentine. You have beautiful eyes to go with your cookie generosity."

"And you," Valentine said with a small laugh, "have a lot of consistency in your bullshit, don't you? I admire that in a man."

He laughed. "You don't believe that I find your eyes beautiful?"

"It's not that," Valentine said, laughing a little herself. "It's just that I'd believe you might have been able to come up with a better line than that."

"I prefer to wait and see if I can get by without having to work very hard first," Mat said, winking.

"If that's the case," Valentine said, and twirled a finger in the air, "you might as well turn right around and seek your easier pastures elsewhere."

"And you're sure this isn't just a chance to see how well my breeches fit," he teased.

"Well," Valentine said, "not anymore, I'm not."

"You're missing out on quite a treat," he wheedled.

"You do seem like the sort of person who wouldn't mind proving another person wrong, though," Valentine offered back.

Mat laughed. "Not at all."
