Multicultural Fair! [The Gym - After Classes]

The benefit of doing something like this for the second time meant that Joan and Turtle had a much easier time of setting things up since they knew what worked and what didn't.

Turtle had, once again, provided decorations from Turtle & Canary. There was the requisite refreshment table, though it was primarily there to provide beverages, since most of the booths featured culturally appropriate food.

After set up was complete, Joan and Turtle sat down to catch up while they waited for the fair to begin.

Jack laughed again in agreement. "Have you met anyone yet who is worth the time?"

"Mostly girls," Mat said, winking. "But Zack doesn't seem that bad, either."

"The girls are wonderful," Jack said happily. "Very welcoming."

... and Mat could take that however he wanted. Ahem.

"Zack's a good man," he added. "He helps to run the reserves."

Mat nodded. "That's where I met him. Did it really rain pastries?"

"It did," Jack nodded. "Fruit- and chocolate-flavored ones. A bit stale, but nothing I wouldn't eat if it's free."

"And I thought the weather at home was crazy," Mat said, shaking his head. "It's just bloody hot there."

"It's bloody hot here," said the boy who'd spent most of his life in Eastern and Northern Europe. "Not so bad these days, but I thought I'd melt all summer."

"Winter wouldn't bloody stop," Mat said, "and then when it did, it was too hot. And now winter should have been back for months and it's still bloody hot." His jaw clenched. "Not that I am ninety years old and need to be complaining about the bloody weather."

"Oh, no, Grams, tell me -- or shall I just get you a shawl?" Jack said sarcastically, then laughed. "It's fine. Pop-tart rain at least merits a mention."

"I'd look good with a shawl," Mat declared, straightening the silk scarf around his neck and laughing. "I thought the syrup was a bit strange, but I didn't realize it was a normal bloody Friday around here."

"Not so much normal as not harmful enough to catch our attention," Jack said ruefully. "All the boys were girls for a day last month -- once that's happened, syrup rain isn't so bad."

"Bloody and ashes, I was hoping Zayne was just trying to confuse me with that example," Mat said, shaking his head. "I like to kiss girls, and dance with them, but I know how the equipment works on this body."

"Sadly not; it happened," Jack said. "It was worse for me because I'd just been out of town. I didn't know up from down for a bit."

"I think the worst part," he added, "is that no one ever has a reason. It's just 'that's how the island is.' "

"The island is bloody creepy," Mat said vehemently.

"And now you know as much as I do," Jack said in agreement, and clapped Mat on the back.
