DADA for Muggles [Wednesday, September 9, 5th period]

The Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom today resembled a farmers' market. Under the enchanted sky (today a clear blue), there were bins of various objects: cabbages, sticks, potatoes, and logs.

"Good afternoon, class," Remus said as they entered, the desks shoved to the sides of the classroom. "Today we tackle the problem of camouflaged enemies. Since this is only the second week of class, we're starting you out small. Each of these bins contains both perfectly innocuous objects, and creatures that resemble them. None of them is particularly dangerous -- however, you are all welcome to a pair of gloves, should you feel the need."

He paused, and continued, "While these animals are all from our world, specifically, it is hardly uncommon for creatures, both dark and light, to conceal themselves by masquerading as something else. For instance, most jungle-dwelling large cats have patterns that resemble shadows from their natural environment, so as to blend in all the better and stalk their prey."

"Some modifications can serve defensive purposes," Sirius added. "And some--like a Whomping Willow--" his eyes twinkled at Remus, "--are just ornery." Sirius nodded and gestured at the bins. "In today's exercise, you're looking to differentiate dugbogs from logs, bowtruckles from sticks, gnomes from potatoes and Chinese Chomping Cabbages from, erm, cabbages." He began passing around sheets of parchment breaking down the differences between the various objects.

"And as a final note, next week we will be covering boggarts, which take the form of your greatest fear," Remus added. "If you'd like to be excused from class in advance, do please see Professor Black or myself during our office hours."

Despite the sheet, Alex was seriously wondering if these two guys were speaking in tongues. Bowtruckle? Really? Sounded like a porn name. Nevertheless, he picked out a pair of oven mitts (since he recognized those) but didn't put them on yet.

This was a topic Firekeeper was fairly knowledgeable about already, given that she'd grown up around wild beasts. Still, she (and Blind Seer!) listened.

Listened, and frowned dubiously at the gloves. They were a bit too similar in concept to shoes as far as she was concerned.

Didi picked a pair of striped gloves. They were comfortable and made her happy to look at, and that was what mattered.

Jenny frowned a little at the thought of something taking the shape of her greatest fear and, after due inspection of the gloves, took a pair of dragonhide ones. She wasn't quite sure what animal the leather had come from, actually (though she probably would've guessed 'dragon' right after 'Japanese monster'), but they looked nice and sturdy. Midnighter probably wished he had a pair.

...Francine would be taking gloves, YES. Big gloves. Thick gloves. Tooth-proof-gloves.

Priestly went with the oven mitts. In a class like this, he figured every little bit of familiarity helped.

Jo picked out a pair of dragonhide gloves, flexing her fingers to make sure she still had a full range of movement.

Jack picked up a pair of dragonhide gloves, and felt pretty badass doing it. Almost made him want to pose heroically with the gloves.

Diana grabbed a pair of sturdy looking gloves. She could keep things from biting her, but she would rather pay attention to what she was doing.

The frightening striped gloves seemed to speak to Griff on a homemade level. Also, they were small enough for his hands, shhh.

Annja was paying close attention to the lecture and she even looked over the gloves.

Dragonhide. Huh.

Well that would solve a few problems if he made his own back home...

Effy snagged a pair of drab beige gardening gloves, which she wasn't putting on until she absolutely had to. Not the nicest things in the world.

Andy listened to the lecture a little bemusedly and then picked out a pair of dragonhide gloves because that was what the teacher had. He figured that meant they were the most useful in this situation.

The scary leathery ones, all the way. If they were likely to get bitten, something should get a mouthful of scales, as far as Dinah was concerned.

It took some poking through the gloves, but Sam finally found a pair of dragonhide ones that fit his hands. He wasn't crazy enough to go without.

Alice ... did not like the sound of boggarts, and made a mental note to find one of her professors during their office hours next week.

She would do without gloves, however. A bite was not going to scare her. She'd been bitten by worse.

This seemed a little different, but Eleanor had confidence that her teachers would not be putting their students in any great danger. So she picked out a pair of colorful striped gloves. They were very ... unique.
