Care for Magical Creature; Monday, Fourth Period [ 08/31 ].

As the students found their way to the classroom in which Care for Magical Creatures would be meeting on non Danger Shoppe days, they might have found the large man in the armour holding a hamster to be a little bit twitchy.

You see, Minsc really, really, really wanted to demolish something for this class. It was just such a great way to start a class. And it was perfect for rangering, because rangers could demolish things; it was all part of the job description.

However, this was the new school year, and Care for Magical Creatures was a Srs Bsnz class. And demolishing things had little to do with faeries. At this moment. Minsc was working on it.



He did, however, make sure to push back all those stupid desks and put lots of comfortable pillows and the like down for everyone to sit on and be comfortable. Desks were too conforming! Pillows were comfortable and fun! He made a sweeping gesture toward them, raising his booming voice, "Good afternooooon, and welcome! To Care for Magical Creatures! You are all here today because you want to learn about magical creatures! Or you are here by mistake! But if it is the latter, I hope you decide to still stay because magical creatures are awesome! Just ask Boo!"

He held out the hamster. "This is Boo! He is a giant miniature space hamster! And I am Minsc! I am a ranger from the land of Rashemen of Faerûn! I have a big interest in magical creatures, especially caring for them and how to care for ourselves around them, as many of them are very dangerous! This semester is faeries and faerie kind! Do not start to scoff! The fae are some of the most tricksy and dangerous kinds of magic out there and you must not be caught unawares, or, hoo boy, you will regret it! They can make curses that'll make your life annoying, a living hell, or worse!"

"Now, one very important thing to remember is that we are here in a place of many worlds; faeries as I know them and will be teaching them might not necessarily be like the faeries you are used to! But if this is the case, I would love for it to be mentioned! That way, we can learn about even more varieties, and be better prepared for eventual encounter!"

"Today is light! Today I want introductions! Who are you, where are you from, and what is your interest in faeries? Have you any interesting faery stories? Next week shall be more academic, but it's the first week so we are so taking it easy! I will have a syllabus for you eventually. I'm going to finish it this week. Writing? IS HARD."

"Oh! And another thing! The fae folk have many holidays and to celebrate their culture, we will be celebrating some of their holidays as we come across them! There are no faery holidays in late August, but the last one was August 13, Take a Vole to Tea Day! This is following, of course, Ignore the Vole day and Spank the Vole day, which is why you have to take them to tea."

He put a foot up on the large box next to him. "Here are your voles! You are to ignore them, then spank them, and then, sometimes during the week, take them out to tea. But introductions first! Boo and I will be keeping our eyes out for TAs this semester, too, so look sharp, and we might just pick you!"

Lion-o was trying to get comfortable on his cushion, but his massive legs kept getting in the way. It may have looked like he was squirming as he listened to Minsc.

Not with fear, though admittedly she was a bit taken aback by, uh, space hamsters and such, but with glee. This could be fun!

Arthur had taken to Minsc quite well, so Morgana figured that taking one of his classes would be a wise choice.

"I'm Zack Fair, from Gongaga on planet Gaia, and I really don't have any experience with fairies, but I figured it was better to be safe than sorry, right? You never know when that kind of thing might jump up!"

"I am Lion-o, Lord of the Thundercats. I originally came from the planet Thundera, but recently the Thundercats have relocated to a new planet very much like this one," he said. "I haven't had many encounters with faeries, actually, though my Snarf has told me stories about them."

Nope, she's not kissing up -- she doesn't know what that means. She really does think he's the best teacher and ranger evar.

"I'm Eric van der Woodsen," he began, "and while I've had experience with fairies, they haven't quite been the kind that we're discussing in this class. So, I guess I've just heard stories?" Eric grinned at that. "But I'm sure I'll learn a lot!"

"Now that that's over," Minsc said, once everyone had been introduced, "it is time for voles! Voles are very gregarious creatures; that means that they like to be social! This is especially so with faeries, who often share underground dwellings with voles! Unfortunately, by the time August rolls around, most faeries start to get annoyed with the voles being..." He chuckled, "overly-friendly. And so they have made a holiday out of ignoring the voles this time of year."

"When I release the voles, they will try to be very friendly to you! And you might want to be friendly back! They are cute! But you mustn't! You must ignore them! The voles hate this, but it is good for them, and remember, we shall make it up to them."

And so he opened up the box. "Huzzah!"

Oh, Zack was doomed. He was trying to be firm! He was trying not to go, "Awwwwwww," and then reach down and pick one up and take it home with him and introduce it to Mr. Winkles and let them be the bestest friends ever and this class was hard.

"Okay!" Minsc called out once everyone had ignored the voles for a bit. "These voles! They are still being friendly! This is the time where the faeries try to teach them a lesson by spanking them! So quick! Catch a vole! And then spank him! Then they will leave you alone!"

"I can't spank a vole when it's being nice to me!" Zack was practically squeaking, himself. Couldn't they just skip to the tea part now? These things were cute and friendly!

Spanking the voles left the classroom full of a lot of sulking voles.

"Now," Minsc said, "we have a lot of sad voles, don't we? And you feel bad for spanking them, right? Faeries feel bad at this point, too. They are very impulsive and mischievous, but they do have hearts. Sometimes! But they do live with these voles, so they have to make peace! Find your vole and make a date to have tea with him sometime before the next class to make amends."

"Until next year, anyway!"

Oooh. Hey, Zack could totally do this part!

He leaned over, singling out whichever vole just happened to be closest, and he grinned.

"My gerbil and I would be really happy if you'd join us for tea. Mr. Winkles is a little rough around the edges, but I bet he'd love some company that's just about his size." A pause. "I promise, there won't be any spanking."

Just a few notes:

2. Yes, I based this entire class around getting to use the faery holidays straight from the Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Calendar.
3. For the Vole Teas, feel free to mod that Minsc made sure the vole was available for whenever you have your tea. Naturally, handwavey is a-okay. But....come on. Vole. Tea. You know you want to.
4. I start my new job training today! YAY! Unfortunately, this means my availability today is CRRRAAAPTASTIC. So SP is lovely. Very, very lovely.
5. I am going to have way, way, way, way too much fun with this class. Syllabus will be up by the end of the week, too. Promise!
