Library [08/30]

Kyle was standing in the middle of the library. The office had given him instructions to be here, open the library and, at some point, talk to the librarian about being a library aide. Seemed pretty straight forward, right?

He didn't have the heart to tell them they should maybe choose someone who knew how to read properly.

Kyle was just going to sit up here on this counter and look around. No wait. Was that a shiny nickel on one of the shelves? He was going to go look at that instead.

Kyle slid off the counter. "Kyle Reese," he said with a nod. "The office told me to be here." It was probably the moose's idea of a joke.

"Well that's because you work here now. I'm Dr. Jones," he said offering his hand. "I'm the librarian. Ever work in one before?"

He shook his head. "I've slept in one before, and I was in here looking when everyone fell asleep that time." Not exactly a shining work history.

"Well we've had less experienced people in here."

Dr. Jones mentally noted that Kyle's outfits were at least not an eyesore compared to Claudia's. "I expect we should get by with a few tutorials on the Dewey Decimal system and how the equipment works."

"I'm good with my hands and I'm pretty organized," he said, perking up at the mention of equipment. "The decimal system - does that mean it uses numbers?"

"Yeah," Indy said giving Kyle a skeptical look. "Helps with the classification of texts. Then by title and author. You never heard of it?"

Kyle shook his head. "I'm from a future where civilization is in ruins and most of the libraries are rubble." He'd been practising how to explain home in fewer words.

Indy's eyebrows went up a little at that. "I'm sorry to hear that," Indy said sympathetically. "It's probably good you're hear. A few semesters in a library is a good way to get some decent reading done."

"Uh, are there any books here on how to learn how to do that?"

"You mean... to read?" Indy asked carefully.

"Yeah," Kyle replied, his voice quieter than before. "I can't really, I mean I can a little, but not really."

Indy gave him a small smile. "Well I think we might be able to help you out with that," he said encouragingly. "What do you feel most comfortable reading?"

"English?" He didn't quite understand.

Indy gave a little chuckle. "Sorry. I meant what subject would most like to read about."

"Ohhh." He thought about it for a little while. "My Dad used to read me detective stories. I liked those."
