BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Rather than fly from Philadelphia to Baltimore, Eric's parents had given him a lift. They had offered to drive him directly to the school, but he told them he would rather meet the group at the airport and take the shuttle. That way he'd get an early glimpse at all the hot girls he was sure would be going to his new school.

So now he was relaxing in the lounge, drinking a soda and waiting. It wasn't going to college, but it would do.

Death. Illyria had been called that before, in the days when no one measured days and her breath could topple empires, but it had been flattery, not truth. There were greater powers than her, and older.

Though possibly not more bitter. "I died."

"Oh."

A moment of quiet, there. Not sympathy -- it wasn't a terrible thing -- but respect.

"And you came back."

"I was brought back." She lifted up one almost-bony hand, and her dismissive gesture took in the bus stop and most of the universe beyond it. "The world is less than what it was."

"I think it's about the same," Didi said. "The details change, but ... there's still air and trees and water. They have hot dogs and music and fish food. You probably just aren't paying enough attention."

Illyria dropped her hand and crossed her arms again - less stubborn than enclosing, this time. "I can't hear the trees anymore."

"They talk to you?" Didi said, and corrected herself. "They did."

In the most technical of senses, she was there at the end for trees, too, but she wouldn't say she talked to them.

"They don't speak." Illyria shook her head. "But they sing."
