BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Rather than fly from Philadelphia to Baltimore, Eric's parents had given him a lift. They had offered to drive him directly to the school, but he told them he would rather meet the group at the airport and take the shuttle. That way he'd get an early glimpse at all the hot girls he was sure would be going to his new school.

So now he was relaxing in the lounge, drinking a soda and waiting. It wasn't going to college, but it would do.

And he must also be dreaming.

Cal bit his lip against what he figured would not be a very amazing smile, blushing deeply, and finding himself having to avoid those practically adoring eyes as he shrugged modestly. "Well, I mean, it would only be my second time..."

"...you didn't kill anybody, did you?" Hayley said.

Not that she would've minded if he did.

There was...a pause, there. Because Cal wasn't sure how he should answer that; really, he could go either way, although it wasn't like he killed anyone directly, here. And it wasn't why he wound up in jail.

"...no," he finally decided, sounding uncertain with it as an answer.

Hayley leaned in. "It's okay if you did," she whispered. "I don't judge nobody."

Cal, for a moment, felt a little awkward, but, at the same time, there was a girl, a cute one, taking an almost perverse interest in him. He'd spent most of the last three months in a foreign land, building churches and getting somehow involved with gypsy thieves. Having a girl perversely interested in him was...incredibly appealing.

But to the extent that he'd want to go into his unintentional patricide? That lead down roads not to be wandered, after all.

"I got involved in gypsies while I was over there," he offered, swaying from the topic without actually confirming or denying anything about it. "And it was just a lot of being in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Story of his life.

"Ain't that the truth," Hayley said. "I know exactly what you mean." She nodded.

Now that was interesting. Cal almost wondered if she could manage matching him with Wrong Place, Wrong Time moments, and lifted his eyebrows thoughtfully at her.

"Have you ever killed anyone?" he asked, figuring that not only was turn about fair play, but it might be a pretty damn important thing to know about a person, really.

"Oh, no," Hayley said. "I only ever hit one person, ever. And he deserved it. But he definitely lived. Stupid Batman."

"Batman?" Cal asked, feeling an intense relief. He liked crazy. He kind of had to like crazy. But he wasn't sure how he felt about homicidal crazy. "I hear his parents are dead. What did he do to deserve it?"

"He was trying to beat up the most beautiful woman in the world," Hayley said with a sigh. "That's just not right."

Well, that was all sort of subjective.

After all, the most beautiful woman in the world was a private school lacrosse player with red hair and freckles and a really bad nicotine habit that Cal had taken up in tribute.

"What'd he try to do that for?"
