BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Rather than fly from Philadelphia to Baltimore, Eric's parents had given him a lift. They had offered to drive him directly to the school, but he told them he would rather meet the group at the airport and take the shuttle. That way he'd get an early glimpse at all the hot girls he was sure would be going to his new school.

So now he was relaxing in the lounge, drinking a soda and waiting. It wasn't going to college, but it would do.

"Omigod, I hope so," Kelly said, frowning, "because I don't want to have to go on two buses of strangers, and what if I got on the wrong one, and it took me to a different school, and like, I didn't even know until like, next year?"

Cal couldn't tell if that was sincere or not, and he didn't know how he felt about how he wasn't sure which he would have hoped for more.

"Then that," he said, "would be really impressive. A year's a long time for no one to be all, 'hey, wait a sec, something's not right here.'"

Said the guy who lived most of his life with no one noticing he was a he-she.

"I know, right, but maybe they might just not have the heart to tell me," Kelly said wisely.

To that, Cal couldn't help grinning a little. "Maybe," he said. "I can see it now. Scene?" He held out his hands. "The teacher lounge. Topic? 'You know that girl in the pink?' 'The one at the wrong school.' 'Yeah. I mean, would you want to tell her?' 'After a year? No way. You tell her.' 'Let's make the new guy tell her.' 'Perfect! Hey! New guy...'"
