BWI Portalocity Terminal [Saturday Morning]

Rather than fly from Philadelphia to Baltimore, Eric's parents had given him a lift. They had offered to drive him directly to the school, but he told them he would rather meet the group at the airport and take the shuttle. That way he'd get an early glimpse at all the hot girls he was sure would be going to his new school.

So now he was relaxing in the lounge, drinking a soda and waiting. It wasn't going to college, but it would do.

There's a boy there, a bit in the background, a little non-descript; he's sitting on a suitcase, a skateboard in his hands as he works on tightening one of the wheels. He's worried, you see, that it came a little loose during the plane ride.

Every now and then, he looks up at the others, a little nervous. He's barely been out of California, just the one trip to Mexico with Gabe's family, and now here he is across the country for school.

"Cool board, dude," Eric said.

Zach looks up. "What? Oh." He pushes it away from him a bit, holds it out. Not quite at arms' length. "It's just a board. Got it for ten bucks from a pawn shop."

"You any good on it?" Eric asked.

"I'm okay," Zach said. "Me and my best friend, we've made some videos and stuff, but just, y'know, for-us kinda stuff."

Eric nodded. "That's cool. I never got into boarding seriously."

"It's not that hard," Zach pointed out. "You could probably learn."

"Probably, yeah," Eric said. "Oh, I'm Eric."

"Zach. Where're you from?"

"Philadelphia," Eric said. "My parents drove me here. You?"

"I flew in from San Pedro," Zach explained. "Well, LA, I guess."

"Oh, cool," Eric said. "I met a few other people from California."

"Hey," Tony said. He'd gotten an overpriced bottle of water from a vending machine and spotted the nervous-looking skater kid. "You going to Fandom High?"

"Yeah," Zach said, smiling a bit. Still nervous, a little. "Got a scholarship, I guess. And Mom could use one less around the house right now." He set the board aside this time, satisfied that the wheel was tight. "Zach," he added. "I mean, I'm Zach."

"Nice to meet you. I'm Tony," Tony said. "Where are you from?"

Zach shrugged. "Nowhere special. San Pedro." He reached down, threaded the skateboard through the shoulder-straps of his backpack. "You?"

"Vancouver," Tony said, then added, "This'll be my second year in Fandom."

"Oh, you're... not one of the new kids?" Zach asked. "I thought that's who the shuttle thing was for." It was what the pamphlet had said, after all.

"Mostly," Tony agreed. "I was working in Vancouver this summer, though, so I'm on my way back and this is cheaper than a cab. Plus I get a sneak peek at the newbies before the picnic."

Zach nodded. "I can see that," he said. "So, what's the school like?"

Tony considered that for a long moment, then said, "Not like anywhere you've been before." Then he thought about that and added, "Probably."

"Wouldn't be hard," Zach said. "I've never really been out of California before."

"I've never been to California," Tony said. "I always thought it'd be nice, living somewhere that's sunny all the time."

"It has its good sides," Zach agreed. "It's great for surfing."

"Never done that," Tony admitted.
