Rather than fly from Philadelphia to Baltimore, Eric's parents had given him a lift. They had offered to drive him directly to the school, but he told them he would rather meet the group at the airport and take the shuttle. That way he'd get an early glimpse at all the hot girls he was sure would be going to his new school.

So now he was relaxing in the lounge, drinking a soda and waiting. It wasn't going to college, but it would do.

"Omigod, like, are those permanent or wash-out?" Kelly asked, eyeing the girl's hair obliviously. "'Cause, like, I have been trying to find really cute highlights to streak in for forever but my mom is all 'Kelly, you have beautiful hair, why would you ruin it with blond streaks to make you look cheap?' And I'm like, 'Mom, but highlights are so cool! And if I could like, find some wash-out kinds? I would totally be fine, because she would be like, lecturey for a day and then they would wash out in two weeks and it wouldn't even be a thing, you know?"

Illyria tilted her head so far that if she were human, you would have heard it crack. Each of the words that had come out of the girl's mouth was one she recognized as English, but together it was like the the buzzing of a hive of bees.

And she wasn't even being pretentious and disdainful. Yet. It really made no sense to her at all.

"Did you just speak to me?"

"Um, yeah?" Kelly said, tilting her head curiously. "Oh my god, do you like, have a hearing problem?"

She raised her voice considerably, now miming what she was saying. "I like your hair!" she said loudly, pointing from her own head to Illyria's. "It's like, adorable? And the blue is nice! I like how it matches your lipstick." And yes, like with the hair, she was now pointing to her mouth.

Illyria covered her ears, staring blindly at the girl. "Why do you assault me with this noise?" Which was code for Why the hell am I not allowed to kill you - oh yes, I promised Wesley I wouldn't.
