Surviving Deep Space - Thursday, Period Two - 8/20

As they walked into the class, Rimmer actually looked rather... rather emotional.

"This is, as you should all know, my very last class with you. I am sure that you will all miss me, that you will lament those moments when you doubted me, or drew on me with a permanent marker, or laughed behind my back and thought I couldn't see because yes, I did see that and you know who you are."

He breathed in after that.

"But today, we face the worst enemy you will ever possibly come up against, the most repugnant, the most terrible:"

He leaped over to one side of the room and revealed video monitors, each one with a face that should look familiar: it was his students. Well, it was a version of his students. Each of them in the monitor had some sort of terrible new feature, most of them were either overweight or their clothing was hideous, and at least one was sporting a rather pointless toupee.

"Yourselves! In the future!"

Tahiri shot one more suspicious look at the mirror and turned to him. "Good thing this is the final, huh?"

"I can't wait for this class to be over," he agreed, nodding. "Not that I don't like everyone who's in here, but..."

She knew exactly what he meant, of course, and didn't have to finish the sentence. "Yeah. Not exactly what I expected. Why am I wearing that?"

"No idea," Ben said, keeping his voice carefully neutral. "I like you this way much better."

"Even without the extra couple of inches?" Tahiri asked, looking at him curiously. She'd expected a different reaction, honestly; when the vague suspicion that was forming in her mind now coalesced into something less vague, it was a good bet that she wouldn't be happy about it.

Ben smiled. "Sure."

"You just like being taller than me," she told him, as if a couple of inches would have changed that anyway. Oh, look, opportunity for a segue! Sort of. "After this it's just Tactics, and then I'm done."

"I have Tactics and the class where we play games," Ben said. "We should celebrate with ice cream after I'm done tomorrow."

Why yes, he was taking the segue and running away with it. Far, far away from all Tahiris who wore tight jumpsuits.

~~Be glad the temptation to throw shock shackles and manacles in there wasn't that strong.~~ The farther the better. "All celebrations call for ice cream. Is that a date, Skywalker?"

"Only if you say yes," he teased.

Tahiri propped her chin on her hand and looked at him, eyes twinkling with mischief . . . and feet swinging clear of the floor. Of course. "Well, I guess that's a little more of a convincing reason to decide not to say no."

"You'd think of saying no?" Ben's pout was very, very pouty. "That's mean."

"I'd think of it," Tahiri allowed, "but actually saying it is a different story. Did you really think I would?"

Not even for an instant.

"Yes," he said, grinning.

She liked to think she knew him well enough to know the real answer.

"Uh huh," Tahiri retorted. "My question was the answer, gundark."

Ben, maturely, stuck his tongue out at her. "I knew that."

Tahiri, because she was so much more mature than he was, stuck her tongue out right back at him. "That's why you were pouting, right?"

Giving Ben a good time -- in an affectionate way -- was becoming quite the favorite pastime.

"Yes," Ben said. "I wanted to see if you would feel guilty."

"And you called me mean," Tahiri said. Fair was fair, so she turned the pout right back on him.

It was more that he'd been desperate to turn the conversation away from older, kinda slutty looking Tahiri.

I'd kiss you but...class, he sent toward her.

Tahiri was not a fan of ~~a fate as the GFFA's diminutive evil slutbomb wtf~~ that look herself, and was perfectly fine ignoring it.

That just means you have to pay up after class, she sent back.

He grinned. Name the place, Veila.

Tahiri flashed him a smirk. Our usual beach spot, Skywalker?

It's a different date, he said. I'll bring the blanket.

Should I bring ice cream anyway? Tahiri's mental voice sounded as amused as the expression on her face looked. She was pretty sure she knew what the answer would be.
