Surviving Deep Space - Thursday, Period Two - 8/20

As they walked into the class, Rimmer actually looked rather... rather emotional.

"This is, as you should all know, my very last class with you. I am sure that you will all miss me, that you will lament those moments when you doubted me, or drew on me with a permanent marker, or laughed behind my back and thought I couldn't see because yes, I did see that and you know who you are."

He breathed in after that.

"But today, we face the worst enemy you will ever possibly come up against, the most repugnant, the most terrible:"

He leaped over to one side of the room and revealed video monitors, each one with a face that should look familiar: it was his students. Well, it was a version of his students. Each of them in the monitor had some sort of terrible new feature, most of them were either overweight or their clothing was hideous, and at least one was sporting a rather pointless toupee.

"Yourselves! In the future!"

Anemone looked at the monitor, nose wrinkling in confusion before sticking up her hand.

"Soooo... what does this have to do with space? I don't get it."

...Rimmer blinked.

"You don't get it?"

How could they not get it?!?!?!eleventy!

"No, I don't get it," Anemone repeated patiently. "Is fear of aging a typical human concern? And wouldn't the relativistic nature of space travel reduce the effects of time on a human body?"

Her eldest sister had been fourteen-years-old for forty years, then spent the next ten as a giant mutant lotus-flower before being removed from this plane of existence. The ability to get old seemed kinda cool to Anemone.

Danny's hand went up as soon as she finished speaking. "I'm with her," he said.

He rubbed at his forehead, wishing he didn't feel the H there.

"It's you! In the future! After you've turned into worthless smegs whose only ambition is to feed your own hungers and desires with no consideration for the space/time continuum. I assure you, this is terribly dangerous."

"That's not the only future," Danny replied firmly. "Any action can change things, for better or worse. I've seen one of the paths already, and it's way more dangerous than just... growing up and becoming like everyone else in the world!"

"Yes, of course, but it is a future that can come and try to blow you up without much notice," he pointed out in reply."

"Do you even know what you're talking about anymore?" Danny asked, looking frustrated. "How is aging and being focused on what you need and want going to blow anybody up?"

Rimmer shook his head with deep remorse for the travesty that was the Earth educational system. They never would have stood for this sort of nonsense on Io.

"You have utterly missed the point of this lesson, Mr. Fenton. A shame, really. You had such promise."

...Danny, you're trying logic. Rimmer doesn't have any.

Danny rolled his eyes. "Oh no. My future is ruined because the crazy who didn't teach me anything thinks that failing me in a summer workshop matters for something."

When in doubt: sarcasm.

"Oh no," he said with a shake of his head, "oh no, no no no, I don't intend to fail you. I'm not failing anyone ever. In fact, I'm going to make sure to pass you with flying colors."

Thus, his mind, ensuring everyone's misery. After all, being held back and failing was what had made a Certain Someone into a better, happier, more successful person. He wasn't doing that for any of these ingrates. Not when not a single one of them offered to be his TA!

Danny stared at him for a solid minute before shaking his head, and then headdesked once, resting his forehead on the desk.

He wasn't sitting back up until someone said something that made sense.

"Interesting."

Let it never be said Ender didn't have a talent for carefully worded non-answers. ~~Not that his actual future was going to be any better.~~
