Strategy Games; Friday, 08.14.09; Fifth period

There were only two boxes out on the tables today.

"Today," Reid said, as the class assembled. "Today I thought we'd try something a little more complicated. Today," he continued, gesturing to the two boxes. "Risk itself is a relative newcomer, compared to the other games we've done so far, but as a war game, it's part of a tradition that goes back... that goes back as far as war itself does. Many of the games we play in modern times are in essence war games - the simulated and highly stylised battlefield of chess, for example. Risk is just more blatant about being what it is.

"The rules of the game should be in each box. If either is missing a set, or there's something you don't understand, come to me and I'll explain it, but part of learning about board games is learning how to read the directions." He flashed the class a quick smile, before sitting down at his desk.

Oh god oh god.

"Um, yeah, sure, that'd be great," Sam said. Maybe Claire would think he was a transfer student. Or someone foreign. He could hope, couldn't he?

Claire smiled. Maybe if she hadn't seen all the other 'new' girls around she would believe that.

And given that there were only four boys in the class... narrowing down who he was wasn't that terribly difficult.

"Unless you're too distracted to play," she teased.

"I'm not too distracted," Sam said, and if nothing else worked, the bitchface might have given him away.

"Sure about that, Sam?" Claire asked, snickering as she made her educated guess.

Sam sighed, and nodded. "I hate when this happens. Especially since all the girls seem to be fine."

"At least you didn't have to borrow clothes from your girlfriend?" Claire offered.

Wait. Sam didn't have a girlfriend. Sam had a Peter.

"Ohmygod is Peter a girl?"

"No," Sam said, sounding extra grumpy. "This never happens to him, only me." And every other boy, but pssh, details.

Claire snickered. "Awww. Jon's a girl too. I almost beat him up til I realized it was him. Then I gave him my clothes."

Pause.

"Wait. This has happened before?"

"Twice in the time that I've been here," Sam said. "Last time, it happened to the girls too, so you should be glad you still have all the right parts."

"Oh, I am," Claire said. Though now that she knew it was a possibility, she wouldn't freak out if it did happen.

At least not as much.

"You're pretty cute as a girl," she offered.

"Thanks, I guess. I like being cute as a boy though," Sam said, snickering. "I do get an appreciation for girls every time this happens though. I don't know how you wear bras without wanting to die."

Claire laughed. "They aren't really that bad. Plus they're pretty. I don't keep them in neat little rainbow ordered rows though."

Oooooooops.

Sam narrowed his eyes at Claire. "And how, exactly, do you know the organizational system of my underwear drawer?"

"You, uh, organize your underwear that way? Really?"

Claire was aiming for innocent surprise.

"Yes, I do, although I had to rearrange things after someone stole some of my underwear while we were at the cabins. You wouldn't know anything about that, would you?" Sam asked.

"Why would anyone steal your underwear?" Claire asked. "Maybe you just misplaced it?"

"I'm pretty sure I didn't misplace it to be hanging up at the campsite," Sam replied.

"The only cheerleaders I know here are you and Savannah," Claire said.

"The cheerleader-friendly then?" he suggested. "There's nothing wrong with being organized, you know."

"Luckily, I don't have to deal with bras or how to organize them," Sam said, sounding a bit smug.
