Tactics, 8/13

"Good morning, class," Jim said once everyone was in their seats. "Today we'll be discussing no-win scenarios."

Shut up, Bones.

"I want you all to split off into pairs and come up with a situation where there is no way to win other than to not go into it at all. That shouldn't be too difficult, right? When you've gotten that done, I want you to write it down and bring it to class with you next week for the final exam."

He grinned.

"And yes, there is a final exam. Good luck," He said, plopping down in a swivel chair.

He missed his so damn much.

He took her hand and shook it. "Remind me to find you the next time Fandom decides to be invaded by something," he said, only half joking.

"I'm retired," she laughed, also only half-joking. "I'm one of the remaining senior library aides, so I tend to be more research-oriented during our invasions."

"I've already used up my 'save the world' card, and there's not much I can do here anyway. No mecha."

"Mecha? You mean like those giant robots in Japan?" Danny's eyes got big. "You've actually used one?"

Anemone nodded. "For as long as I can remember. I think they bonded me to TheEND when I was about ten, but I'm not really sure."

Special Operations Forces pilot Anemone," she continued, firing off a remarkably crisp salute for someone who tended to shun protocol like the plague. "Current commander of the Ageha Squad, former partner of the LFO Nirvash type TheEnd."

"Which is military-speak for 'you got your fool-butt blown up and pissed off a lot of people, so we're sticking you somewhere that we're praying you can't cause more collateral damage.' Better known as 'high school.'"

Danny gaped for a moment, and finally got his wits together enough to say, "That is so cool."

And then the questions began. "Can it fly, or do you just run along the ground? How tall is it? Where does the pilot sit? What do you mean by bonding?"

"He was about 15m tall, I think," Anemone laughed. "I never really put him up against a yardstick or anything." Just, you know, buildings, the few times she'd had his feet on the ground. "We were an ariel combat unit, although we did have to take it to the streets a few times."

The next part was harder, and she had to think about how to explain it. "And I interfaced with him through an amorphous, organic frame. So no controls that most people would be familiar with," she said. "I could hear him, in my head, even when we weren't hooked together. And he could hear me."

"Wow." Danny was flabbergasted. "That is so cool. Could it make it into space or anything?"

Anemone, meet the only space fanboy ever.
