"Good morning, class," Jim said once everyone was in their seats. "Today we'll be discussing no-win scenarios."

Shut up, Bones.

"I want you all to split off into pairs and come up with a situation where there is no way to win other than to not go into it at all. That shouldn't be too difficult, right? When you've gotten that done, I want you to write it down and bring it to class with you next week for the final exam."

He grinned.

"And yes, there is a final exam. Good luck," He said, plopping down in a swivel chair.

He missed his so damn much.

Who was busy swiveling.

Tahiri hadn't left a message for Captain Kirk before she'd left last week (just last week? Gah. She was still getting used to that.), so apologies were definitely in order.

She walked up to the . . . er . . . swiveling teacher after class. "Captain?"

"Back I see, Miss Veila," Jim said dryly, stopping his enjoyment of the not!captain's chair.

"Back," Tahiri confirmed, and score one for her, she even managed not to give him an outright strange look for the spinning. "I wanted to apologize for missing last class, sir. I was called home on a mission."

"One that didn't give you a chance to call," He prompted. She could take the easy excuse or not. He didn't care.

And here was where the past few months' influence showed. "No," Tahiri said deliberately. "That was my oversight. I never know how much time is going to pass here while I'm gone, but I should have let you know it was going to be a possibility, and I apologize."

"Make it up by passing next week."

She could agree pretty readily to that. "Yes, sir."

"How did the mission go?" Jim asked, almost sounding like he didn't care, but not quite managing the disaffected tone.

Tahiri snorted lightly. "Not exactly as planned, but it was a success."

"Good to see you worked around things then."

"Not without losing people." She wasn't going to be able to resign herself to the inevitability of that for a while, but she'd at least try and fake it, so she shrugged. "But yeah."

If you were resigned to it, then you shouldn't lead or fight anymore. Jim smacked her on the arm in a vaguely reassuring manner. "Lesson learned for next time."

Tahiri blinked, but recovered . . . fairly quickly, anyway. "Guess so, sir."

Ino was not so good with that whole calling people before she wandered off so...

"Captain?"

"Decided to grace us with your presence, Miss Yamanaka?" Jim drawled.

"Absolutely, sir," Ino said, quelling the urge to be more sarcastic. "I just wanted to apologize for missing last week's lesson. I got called home for a mission."

Everyone got the same chance. "One that happened too quickly to call?"

"Yes sir," she lied smoothly. "I'll do my best to call if it happens again."

Jim just watched her for a moment, letting this be the last chance to come clean. "See that you do, Miss Yamanaka."

He wasn't worth her being honest to. Not in her opinion anyway.

"Of course," was all she said.

Jim smiled, waving her off. "Miss Yamanaka? I think we're done here."
