Practical Weaponry [Wednesday, Period Four]

Today the world inside the Danger Shop was monochrome and grainy, a vast gravel quarry lay before the students, train tracks lay in the near distance, and if they listened carefully, the class might have heard the strains of ominous piano music. Bond stood at the edge of the quarry, looking down into it.

"Good afternoon class," he began cheerfully, which was never a good sign. "Given that we're rapidly coming up on the end of our time together, today's exercise is going to incorporate three different elements."

"To begin with, no matter how well-trained you are, there are times that not only does your enemy have more advantages than you, whether in personnel, intel, or weapons, but for whatever reason you are also constrained from taking the path of least resistance and just killing them. To make matters worse, you may even have allies who are a greater hindrance than help.

"Which brings me to my second point. There are also occasions where you can't fight at all. This might be because of injury, you might have have a gun to your head, or you might simply be outclassed. When taken to an extreme, you can be a liability to the very people you are trying to help.

"Finally, there times you can have every advantage in the world, and somehow still manage to make a complete hash of things."

Bond gestured to a list tacked up on a nearby rock-cropping. "For this exercise, you have been randomly placed in one of three groups, the Heroic Saviours, the Damsels in Distress, and the Villainous Scoundrels, each with a different role to play."

He started listing them off on his fingers. "For the Heroic Saviours, your job is to protect a Damsel for the length of the class from a Villain, however you may not do anything which would cause permanent harm to them.

"Damsels, you must try to stay out of the Villain's clutches, however you've sadly contracted a case of terminal incompetence, you have no fighting skills, you can't run particularly fast, and you have a tendency to twist your ankle at the worst possible moment, you're relying on your hero, and not making their job easy." Anyone thinking that Bond had had perhaps a bit too much fun devising this class would be right.

"Villains, you see those railway tracks over there? Your aim is to have a Damsel tied to them at the end of the class. Moustache twirling is optional."

"You can pick your own partners, and your time starts as soon as you have."

...of course he was a damsel. Hannibal facepalmed and hoped he had a damn good hero because, if he had to a damsel, he was damn sure going to be an annoying one.

"Don't worry," Kyle said, seeing the facepalm. "I've saved a damsel in distress with much bigger muscles than you before." He missed Marcus sometimes.

"Whose worried?" Of course he was worried, this guy was the size of a cricket. Maybe a little bigger. "You've done this before, though?"

"Plenty of times!" he assured Hannibal. Twice. Three, if you counted the goat. "But if you want one of the girls instead, I understand."

"No, no," he said, deciding to take his chances with Kyle. "You're good. I don't typically do the damsel thing, though. Don't know how good I'll be considering I'm not a damsel."

"Try not to trip at the worst possible moment and don't fall in love with whoever our villain is. If you can handle that, I think we'll be okay."

"Pretty sure I can do that," he assured Kyle even if he had to be incompetent. "And I guess the hero can't make googly eyes at the damsel or get so annoyed you throw me off a building or something."

"You're taking all of the fun out of this for me."

"I know I'm irresistible and all but you'll have keep your eyes on the prize," he said philosophically. "So we can both survive."

"It's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it. Now all we need is a villain."

"Right, someone to try and steal me away and tie me to train tracks," he said. "Damsels have no fun."

"Damsels have plenty of fun," Triela countered as she walked over with an evil grin. Not because she was a villain, but because sometimes she was evil.

Because, really, she wasn't exactly pleased, but this was by far the best she could have hoped for.

"You two looking for a third to join you?"

"I think we are," Hannibal said ~~since I think Kyle's player has gone to sleeeeeeep~~. "You willin' to villain?"

That was terrible, Hannibal.

Hinata was... both a bit amused and a bit embarrassed.

Damsel in distress, right? She could... do that.

Still a bit out of breath, Karla saw Hinata and grinned.

Wickedly, of course. It was almost a trademark.

"Looking for a villain?" she asked.

"Are y-you sure you're in shape for it?" Hinata asked lightly. "You flew in here so fast. Perhaps you'll be an easy mark for a hero."

Because she was designated as useless this class, ah well.

Karla waved that away. "Bah. The day I can't beat a paltry hero after a little run is the day I hang my head in shame."

She winked. "Please note that after your grisly death by, umm, something--" Karla didn't really know what traintracks were or what they were for "--Yei will be taken care of. Mwahahaha."

"Yes," she agreed, "by Hoshi-san."

Hinata gave her a sidelong glance. "U-Unless," she added, "you were planning on removing her from the equation as well."

Very dastardly.

Karla smirked. "She's being tied down by my minions as we speak. You will die, but you will die together." Villain!Karla was all heart. "My plan is elegant in its simplicity."

You could tell because in involved trains.

"Simplicity," Hinata said, covering a laugh. "Would be to k-kill us in our sleep. Not with trains."

"Really, it's simplest not to kill her at all," Rose pointed out. "Hi, want a hero?"

"I would love one," Hinata said, smiling. "Are you the h-hero to my damsel then?"

"She shall never save you and Yei will be mine," Karla informed Hinata, eyes dancing. It was possible someone secretly enjoyed over-the-top dime novels, it's true. "You are welcome to test your skills against mine, though you will never prevail!" she said to Rose with a grin.

Leda was partly annoyed at having to be the damsel in distress, partly amused at getting to pretend to be a complete idiot, and partly reminding herself not to slug anyone who tried to tie her to anything.

Mixed emotions can be fun.
