Creative Writing [Tuesday, 5th Period]

Today, Rick's class was back in the class-room, where Rick leant against his desk, his arms crossed and not at all looking like he'd redone his class-plan at the last moment.

When everyone had arrived, he began;

"Writers seem much more legit,
When they know how to edit.

Your works will never be best-selling,
If you seem to have no grasp of spelling.

An audience will start to clamour,
When you have atrocious grammar.

Likewise they'll think you're dense,
If you can't keep consistent tense.

Their opinions will certainly start to worsen,
When, random, you go from first- to third-person.

They'll start crying for their Momma,
If you can't learn to use a comma.

So to help ensure no nasty surprises,
Please to do the following exercises."

Rick pointed to a stack of print-outs, and sat back down behind his desk.

Who may go down to the bay.
And eat some hay.
She just may!

Eleanor Robinson
who has the same name as an Aunt of the mun.

(yes really!)

Jack McTeague
who could run a league

Alice Liddell
Fond of riddles

Jon O'Neill
got a shoddy deal.

Which Rick totally didn't come up with at the last moment after he realised just how wrong his planned class sounded in rhyme. Really.

Speaking in rhyme was almost as bad as singing, as far as Joan was concerned.

The rhyming was a distraction, and Kate really liked those today.

Chloe may have been feeling a bit horrified listening to this lecture.

Valentine's mouth, which was grinning sharply against her will, was hidden in her hand as she tried desperately to look attentive and not ridiculously amused by the rhyming.

Yay rhyming! Robin really liked today's lecture.

When we are writers, proof-reading stops us from being mocked on teh interwebs.

Grammar and proof-reading and spelling had never been much of a difficult issue for Valentine, and she was enough of a nerd about language to actually enjoy the exercises. It was a good way to transition back into the school mindset, too, after having been a cat for so long, on top of sisterly duties yesterday.

Eleanor focused on the exercises. It gave her something to take her mind off wondering what exactly had happened to her friends in that other place.

Preferably not in verse.

"Mr. Castle?"

Valentine, of course, had an apology and an excuse to make for her absence last week.

"You may have wondered where I was at
When in this classroom I should have sat
Thought odd it may be
I wasn't quite me,
I was, in fact, stuck as a cat."

What? He started it.

Rick looked up.

"Valentine, so I heard,
It would seem quite absurd,
But for the fact that Kate,
Earlier shared your feline fate,
The idea of students Felidae is outrageous,
So tell me, are these cats contagious?"

Now he was just showing off.

Valentine couldn't help grinning a little, and she lightly shook her head.

"Contagion I highly doubt
For it's very easy to surmount
That I have not of late
Spent much time with dear Kate
So who knows what this is all about?"

At some point, Rick had started rhyming on purpose instead of involuntarily.

"I hope, though it may be in vain,
That you can avoid it happening again.
I assume you do not wish to shirk,
And came to me for make-up work,
However, I am glad to say,
That luck is with you this day,
You only missed the chance to brag,
We spent last week playing laser-tag."

Ooooh. He was good.

"Then that is most fortuitous," Valentine said,
"As I'd have wound up a sour-puss.
Because I can't aim
I'd've spoiled the game
And it'd be best to avoid all that fuss."

After they ping in.

Valentine had a wicked fear
That she might never hear
The end of her joy
At being so coy
In letting the rhyme persevere.

Jon was totally here, and a little worried about the rhyming.
