How to be Awesome | Week 5 | Period 6 | Mon. 8/3

Barney appeared in the classroom looking amazing as always in a brown suit with burgundy shirt and perfectly patterned tie. He could have stepped off the cover of a GQ and right into their lives. True story.

He took a look at the class assembled and grinned, "Ah, it seems everyone is back to themselves and ready to move on with repression! I've got just the thing for it today. Ready? No, seriously, this is going to blow your panties right off!" He waited till he thought the suspense was strong enough. "POETRY!"

Amazing, no? "I know, ladies, you're wondering what poetry will do for you while the men are wondering why they never thought of it before! As a panty-melting agent, the original poem has much to offer, especially considering how freakishly easy it is to write one. Most forms of poetry require no effort whatsoever, but the easiest of them all is the Haiku, which is what you all will be writing today! The standard haiku has three lines of syllables: 5-7-5. String together some words, unbuckle your belt, and say 'arigato' to our Japanese friends for their efficiency in getting you laid." He paused to offer the TAs papers to pass out as was their duty.

"Let me read you some of my original compositions as can be found on my blog. Read it, live it." He cleared his throat.

Barney paused, expecting applause or stunned silence - both were victories in his mind, LILY.

"I know, it's provocative. Take my examples and expand on them! The sky is the limit, or really, your lack of imagination and ability to count five syllables, seven syllables, and five syllables properly. Go!"

Professor Stinson wrote poetry. Leto dropped his forehead on to the desk.

After having a decent (if sleepless) night, Alex was feeling a little quieter today, a little more thoughtful than he had been.

And he was tired but hell if he wanted to sleep.

So much staring.

...unless poetry was like singing!

But what was a syllable? He could not count them if he did not know what one was.

Ah, no matter! He shall prevail!

Effy!kitty, who was laying across his lap, gave him this look. Hm. She went back to licking her paw, completely ignoring him now. There was purring, which was something.

Poetry? Griff would just be over here drawing on a scrap of paper, thanks.

Man, Barney was wearing a fantastic suit.

Yeah, that's all Chuck had.

It was strange, but Barney and his attitude actually made Sam feel a little better. It was like snapping back to a much easier reality.

Harper seriously wondered if she would be tempted to sleep with a guy just because he wrote a haiku. Hmmm, no.

Except if the guy was Eric, because it would be really nice if he wrote her poetry...

Yakko grinned. This would be easy.

Write your very own Haiku and share it with someone in the class. Yes, out loud.

Alex scrawled a haiku quickly and then just read it while he was sitting at his desk. If someone heard him, then he was done with the assignment.

"Smoke
Cigarettes are good
Light one up much too awesome
Hope I have a match."

He was brilliant.

Then she glanced around. Where were Griff and Leto when she needed them?

Griff stared at the paper and just started counting off the words that came to mind.

Uh, no, he wasn't reading it aloud yet.

Edward cleared his throat and smiled wide as he shared his Haiku. In song, no less.

"I've been dreaming of a true love's kiss
And a miss I have begun to miss
Pure and sweet! Waiting to complete!
My looooove's song!"

Pfft. Like you expected anything else.

Figuring this assignment was easy enough, Eva wrote down the first thing that came to mind after a night of practicing in the gym.

In structure, it goes like this

Urrrgh, aah urrr graaheeer
Urrrr, aaaaaaah aah urrgh, graaaah urr ahhh
Braaaaaaaaa-aaaaaaaaaa-aaaaaaa-aaaaaaaa-aaaaaaaains

Yakko could do this all day.

They should write haiku, too. Maybe Barney will make them gather all the poems into a book for the class!

Alex was more trying to focus on the assignment than anything else. His thoughts kept drifting away, back to the other place and he had to yank them back to the here and now.

Wendy was there, but not composing haiku, that was more Lacey's thing.

He is working on a masterpiece but is totes interruptable.

I wrote this haiku at a conference last month, be in awe of my glory:

Exit Sign
There is no leaving
Until we see you up high
You free us from pain.
