Criminal Justice: Wednesday

Gibbs had left word for the entire class to meet him at the Main Campfire for today's class, rain or shine, however Gibbs was no where to be seen.

A few minutes later Gibbs was marching through the campfire shouting at everyone to get their gear.

"You took this course for a reason," Gibbs said trying to herd everyone to the danger shop. "So get your butts moving and get to the danger shop... thing."

Yes. He knew class would end up in the shop. He felt a little exercise helped with the whole training thing.

"Which a construction team was in the process of tearing down some old naval housing units they found a body hidden in an underground bunker with a tunnel leading to one of the houses. Since it was found on a Navy base, we are being called in to investigate."

"Before you enter the crime scene you will learn and obey Rule #3. Always wear rubber gloves at a crime scene. Even though this is underground, you can expect to find a lot of items there. You will bag and tag everything of interest. Before you put a piece of evidence you will have one of your teammates take a picture of the evidence along with a numerical marker and a corresponding L-scale for reference. The room will be measured with every object taken a picture of for a possible recreation at a later time."

Before he opened the doors he looked back at his students. "Just so you know? It's not a pretty scene. If you can't handle it feel free to step out."

He opened the doors to the danger show revealing the interior of an abandoned ammunition bunker. The room was decorated in what appeared to be a room straight out of the 1950s. In the middle of the room was the body of a mummified woman wearing a wedding dress that was chained to the bed.

"There is no identifying information on the body," Gibbs began. "Last time someone was living in the house which was connected to this room via a tunnel was two months ago. That person only lived there thirty days and before that it was vacant. The victim is in a mummified condition and most likely was dead before the tenant lived in the house. I need this entire room fingerprinted. We need to measure the room and take a picture of each artifact before we have it removed from the crime scene. This is an unstable area due to the contruction going on so it means we have to move quickly. Next week we'll go over the evidence and see what it tells us."

Gibbs then went through a brief demonstration of each item in their evidence kits and how and why it was used.

When he was done he clapped his hands together to punctuate that he was done. "All right. Get started. Let's go!"

The OOC: To make things a little different, clues will be discovered randomly by students in the evidence searching threads. I'll be using good ol' RNG to determine which students find what.

The furniture didn't mean much of anything to Jack. He concentrated on the fingerprinting, albeit with some distaste. He liked interviewing witnesses and theorizing, not the parts involving actual dead bodies.

Jack sniggered, adjusted his gloves, and delicately picked it up to thumb through it. Ordinarily he wouldn't have wasted time on the deceased's choice of reading material, but the fact Gibbs had taken the time to program it into the sim suggested this one was important.

Also: Snigger-worthy.

"Some kind of homemaker's manual, all about taking care of the man of the house," Jack said. "I think it's safe to guess this wasn't exactly a happy home, even if the bride chained to the bed didn't give that away."

"Of course," Jack said, and prepared his supplies to do just that.

Sam had seen dead bodies before, but the wedding dress made this one in particular stand out, and he started with trying to get fingerprints from that area of the room.

Sam got closer to the rug and knelt down, trying to see if the circles were part of the rug, or something on it. After some careful probing (with gloves on, despite his instincts), he started taking pictures of the impressions.

"Um, there's some kind of marks on the rug," Sam said. "It looks like something was there, but moved, maybe?"

"Footprints maybe?" Sam suggested, trying to think of things that came in twos. "Someone would have to stand in the same spot for an awfully long time to make marks that stay though."

"It could be from someone kneeling," Sam said, standing by the marks and using his own body as a guide. "Still, a person can't do that to a rug in just a day or two, can they?"

Gabrielle was used to seeing dead bodies, which didn't mean they didn't upset her, and given the circumstances of this one her expression was fairly horrified.

. . . unfortunately, Gabrielle had also once been kidnapped by a mystic who wanted to marry her off to the god of dreams, Morpheus, so she was immediately jumping to all the wrong conclusions as she examined the vanity and the area around the sink.

"Is this some kind of ritual gone wrong?"

Gabrielle scratched at the back of her hand -- the rubber gloves felt strange and she didn't like how they made her hands sweat -- and leaned over to look at some of the items on top of the vanity. "There's no reason it couldn't be both."

"I'm not familiar with this culture's ceremonies, but this kind of attention to detail, in decorating a room, almost has some kind of religious zeal to it. Not to mention being underground is awfully suspect for that sort of thing. I mean, not everyone has the means to kidnap someone away to the dream realms, after all."

. . . no, Gabrielle, most people don't, actually.

Gabrielle was scanning over the vanity looking, like Xena had taught her, for anything that might be out of place. And purple threads certainly stood out against the wood. "Aha! What's this?"

Re: Gather Evidence

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Gabrielle huffed a laugh as she dug through her forensics kit for the tagging equipment. "Idyllic in backwards world, maybe. But still, somebody obviously placed a lot of importance on the setting, so while it might not have been a ritual it has to be symbolic somehow, at least to them. A lot of effort went into making the room look this way, and our friend on the bed there seems to say it wasn't for a very good reason."

Diana twitched the possibilities to make sure that her gloves stayed tightly on her hands and didn't even think about slipping down. And then she got down to poking around the room and tagging and collecting anything that looked promising.

Diana was not a big fan of bugs, but she figured that one or two could probably tell someone something about the room and time of death or something. She started to catalog the bug, trying not to make too much of a disgusted face.

"A shi-a lot of bugs." Diana said, pointing to one. "A lot of dead bugs."

He was, in fact, there, and a little impressed they'd gotten the Danger Shop to generate this.
