Creative Writing [Tuesday, 5th Period]

Rick had sent an email to meet in the computer lab this week, where he sat with his laptop, waiting for the class to arrive.

"Afternoon all," Rick greeted them, closing the lid of the computer as he stood up.

"Character," he began. "Some writers come up with their plots first, then create their characters to suit, but for me, it all begins with character. Over the years, I've found that if you have built strong, well-defined characters, if you know your characters well enough that you can say how they would react in a given situation, then once you introduce your prompt, your 'what if', then the plot is likely to write itself."

"Now there are a lot of resources that you can use when creating a character if you know how to look for them, for example, if you're stuck coming up with a name for a character, looking though a good baby-name book or website can give you ideas, although you should choose a name that suits your character rather than picking a name then trying to come up with a character that fits."

"Then there's your biographies and autobiographies of people who lived in the time and place your character comes from, historical accounts, etiquette books, these will all give you an idea of how your character would have been expected to act, and how people would be likely to react if they stepped outside of normal behaviour."

"Of course, you can always go the route of basing a character, in part or in full, on a real person. However despite the fact that can eliminate a lot of the basic legwork in creating a character, it opens up a lot of potential difficulties that just aren't there with purely fictional characters. Most countries have defamation laws, and there can be a very thin line between roman à clef and a libel suit. Trust me, you want to stay on this side of it. And that's only one way a person can react to discovering an obvious fictionalised version of themselves."

"But that's enough from me," Rick said. "Your job today is to work on creating your main characters for your stories, I want their names, their ages, their jobs, their backstory, what motivates them to do what they do, come up with a description of them, then find someone who best represents that mental image of your main character. You can brainstorm with each other if you're stuck. Then, at the end of the class, I want you to present your character to me and the rest of the class."

Joan started sketching out some vague ideas of a character based on Grace.

Shilo was writing a story about a young man from Maine who wanted to be a rock star who may or may not look like Max Collins from Eve 6.

Priestly tossed around some ideas mentally for a character based on Trucker -- then went with a different idea entirely.

Jennifer's character was going to be a strong, lawyer type. Her mental picture was something hip and young, but strong (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a184/therabidone/topten/topten02.jpg).

Jon really didn't need to brainstorm, he just had to decide who to base his character off of.

Valentine tapped her pencil on her desk as she thought. She had an idea of a name, and just the name at the moment, other than her prompt and a vague idea. Now just to hash out a few details. She had a lot to think about and not enough resources at work to put it in now, la.

Robin found that his contemplation of his character kept going back to the writing prompt. He could think of a few people who'd fake a skill.

Eleanor was wondering if someone she knew could work as a character. Sarah maybe? Or Maya? Perhaps Lady Virginia herself? It would take some thought yet.

Kate wasn't really going to base her character on anyone, but because she had been thinking about her ex-boyfriend the day before, she was now kind of stuck with the idea that the character would look like him.

That wasn't necessarily the best idea, but she was going with it, and scribbling random facts about the character in her notebook.

Jon figured he would go ahead and present his idea. Maybe the TA making the first leap would help.

"Okay. The guy is Jack Danielson. He's an archaeologist in his mid-thirties who discovered an ancient doorway to other planets while on a dig in Mexico. He ends up getting into some really crazy adventures with alien princess, angry natives and crazy aliens with god complexes." Jon went on to describe this geeky space explorer (http://www.fantascienza.com/magazine/imgbank/NEWS/TV/michael-shanks.jpg), who had a more than passing resemblance to a certain general's best friend.

Robin told about his main character, a 14 (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/q0EGdH_JNL1HFxD3h0L0Eg?authkey=Gv1sRgCPPXkvnIpNjtggE&feat=directlink) year (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/RQ7Yj5Blc468fn-ebuQAnA?authkey=Gv1sRgCPPXkvnIpNjtggE&feat=directlink) old (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Ff4bryGkutj8TZALwCNIMA?authkey=Gv1sRgCPPXkvnIpNjtggE&feat=directlink) girl named Bernadette. A tomboy living in Key West who had wacky adventures with her animal and human friends. And she bore a remarkable resemblance to his late friend Beatrice.

"Her name," Valentine had finally concluded, "is Prometheus," and she went on to describe a pale (http://img.listal.com/image/636433/180full-karen-gillan.jpg) redhead (http://images.dailyradar.com/media/uploads/sf/story_preview/2009/05/31/news_who_is_karen_gillan.jpg) in a constant state of perpetual disassociation. "She's clearly young in appearance and disposition, but not much is known about her at all. Unless, that is, you're up to date on your Greek Mythos. She's the bringer of Fire. What exactly that means for the story so far, I'm not sure. It's going to be one of those things that develop with her, I think."
