Tyler smiled slightly at his class as they assembled. No lab supplies were in evidence, just a TV at the front of the room. "Morning. We're just watching a video here and then we're going outside for the experiment -- the Diet Coke-Mentos eruption."

He cued up a DVD player at the front of class. "This is an episode of Mythbusters --- yes, the show I named the clas for -- showing the science behind what we're going to do. I would have a lecture, but I wouldn't say anything the magic box won't already tell you. These guys are good."

The episode played, explaining that the reaction, in which Mentos dropped into a bottle of Diet Coke produce a fountain as tall as a person, is a product of the caffeine, potassium benzoate, aspartame, and carbon dioxide in the Diet Coke and the gelatin and gum arabic in the Mentos, as well as the rough surface of the candies.

When it was over, Tyler turned off the TV. "And now, you get to do this yourself. Grab a buddy and we're going outside. I have Mentos, Certs, M&Ms, Skittles, Diet Coke, regular Coke, and plain soda water, plus Diet Pepsi, so you can play around and see what makes the best fountain."

Once the video was over, Tyler quickly lead the class to the exit and walked them to a plot of ground outside the school, where he'd set up bottles of soda and different candies for the students to experiment on. He was observing and trying to make sure nobody shot their eyes out.

Sure, it was just pop spouting out of a bottle, and Turtle had seen loads of explosions a lot more significant than that, but she was still a dork and a little bouncy on her toes as she looked around to snag a partner.

Claire eyed the soda and candy warily. She was going to be such a sticky mess.

"Hey Clair, you need a partner?"

Helen calmly expeimented with each of the candies, marking down exactly what happened at each trial.

Alex was looking forward to testing the various candies out and wondering which one might make the highest fountain. She glanced around for a partner, thinking the mentos or certs might do the trick.

"Need a partner?" Kyle asked.

"Sure," Alex smiled, nodding slightly. "I've never actually done this before," she admitted. She'd seen it first hand, but had never been a participant. Something about her penchant for pranks, but that was way back when at her old school.

"Me neither, but it seems pretty easy. We mix the little things into the drink, right?"

"That's right," Alex nodded. "See which one goes the highest," she added. "I'm betting on either the Mentos or the Certs, but I could be wrong."

"What's the difference between Mentos and Certs?"

"Well, they're both mints but mentos have chewy centers while certs are hard inside and out," Alex replied. "I have a feeling they have more differences as far as their make up goes, but that's the most notable one."

"Oh, got it. Which one do you wanna try first?"

"Why don't we try the mentos?" Alex suggested. It might be cool to see how the hard coating reacted with the soda.

Sam was fully prepared to try every combination he could think of. It was all in the name of science, after all.

"Okay, how about you experiment while I watch and eat the candy," Chuck suggested. That seemed like a fair plan to him.

"You can at least hand me the candy," Sam said. "Then you can stand back so you don't get wet."

"I suppose I could manage that," Chuck said with an exaggerated sigh.

"I won't ask you to do anything too strenuous," Sam assured him. "How are you feeling?"

"Okay, I guess. Rachel healed me up on Saturday. Benefits of knowing an empath," Chuck said. He frowned slightly. "Blair left over the weekend."

"I heard Emmett mention her on the radio," Sam said casually. Of course he listened on Chuck's nights. "I'm sorry."

"Yeah," Chuck mumbled as he busied himself with opening a bag of Skittles. "Well. Can't really blame her."

"I guess not," Sam said, getting one of the Diet Coke bottles open. "But with you and Serena here...I don't know, it still sucks."

Jack decided to go full-out with this, rolling up a piece of notebook paper into a tube with about half-dozen Mentos in it.

The resulting geyser (and mess) was pretty amazing.

Agnes eyed the reagents carefully. And munched on some Mentos while doing the experiment.
