Mythbusting, Tuesday, Period 2

Tyler smiled slightly at his class as they assembled. No lab supplies were in evidence, just a TV at the front of the room. "Morning. We're just watching a video here and then we're going outside for the experiment -- the Diet Coke-Mentos eruption."

He cued up a DVD player at the front of class. "This is an episode of Mythbusters --- yes, the show I named the clas for -- showing the science behind what we're going to do. I would have a lecture, but I wouldn't say anything the magic box won't already tell you. These guys are good."

The episode played, explaining that the reaction, in which Mentos dropped into a bottle of Diet Coke produce a fountain as tall as a person, is a product of the caffeine, potassium benzoate, aspartame, and carbon dioxide in the Diet Coke and the gelatin and gum arabic in the Mentos, as well as the rough surface of the candies.

When it was over, Tyler turned off the TV. "And now, you get to do this yourself. Grab a buddy and we're going outside. I have Mentos, Certs, M&Ms, Skittles, Diet Coke, regular Coke, and plain soda water, plus Diet Pepsi, so you can play around and see what makes the best fountain."

Really, more than anything this just cemented Katchoo's decision never to drink Diet Coke. That stuff was nasty anyway.

Turtle couldn't help grinning as she watched the video. Really, considering how this was the experiment she'd used to explain to people what Mythbusting was, she would have been disappointed if they didn't actually cover it.

Claire watched the video and glanced down at her clothes. She somehow suspected they were going to be a mess by the end of class.

Sam had to grin as he watched the video. It wasn't like he enjoyed making messes all the time, but this looked like a lot of fun.

Chuck still wasn't in much of a mood to talk to anyone and was thankful they were watching a video for part of the class. He needed to figure out a way to get out of this funk, stat.

Even though she was fairly certain she'd end up a mess after this, Alex was way too excited to care.

Jack watched the video with the world's largest grin. This was now his favorite class.

Robin certainly wasn't wondering if the fountain would be strong enough to propel him into the air.

Kyle propped his chin up on his folded arms on the lab table and watched the video.

Sure, it was just pop spouting out of a bottle, and Turtle had seen loads of explosions a lot more significant than that, but she was still a dork and a little bouncy on her toes as she looked around to snag a partner.

Claire eyed the soda and candy warily. She was going to be such a sticky mess.

Helen calmly expeimented with each of the candies, marking down exactly what happened at each trial.

Alex was looking forward to testing the various candies out and wondering which one might make the highest fountain. She glanced around for a partner, thinking the mentos or certs might do the trick.

Sam was fully prepared to try every combination he could think of. It was all in the name of science, after all.

Jack decided to go full-out with this, rolling up a piece of notebook paper into a tube with about half-dozen Mentos in it.

The resulting geyser (and mess) was pretty amazing.

Agnes eyed the reagents carefully. And munched on some Mentos while doing the experiment.

Glitter in her fountain would be an amazing idea, really!

So, yes, Ino was totally contemplating it as she tried to look all TA-ly. Ish.

Anemone was totally digging in her bag to see if she had glitter to put in her fountain, yes. She had some left-over from when she and Warren had shredded the tinsel and put it in the showerheads somewhere....

She probably didn't look very TA-ish considering that she was giggling madly, but she was still there and willing to help.
