Driver's Ed [Thursday, Week 1, Period 5]

As the students trickled into the Danger Shop, they would find Ziva standing and waiting for them at the front of the room, cradling a cup of coffee in her hands. Sure, it was late in the day, but caffeine addiction ran deep.

"Good afternoon," she said. "My name is Ziva David, and for the next few weeks, I will be instructing you in driver education. I have been told that it is customary to tell you a little about myself, although I was not advised as to what you might be interested in hearing. I will tell you that Israel is my home, but for the last few years, I have been living in the United States while working for NCIS. Those of you who are or have been enrolled in Criminal Justice have met my previous boss, Special Agent Gibbs." She still hadn't quite gotten over that. "If you have not, all you need to know is that if you decide to pass notes while you should be paying attention, I will catch you."

"I do not intend for us to spend our time here memorizing traffic laws or reading from books," she continued. "I am a firm believer that the best way to learn how to drive is to actually do it, and that it is more important to know how to handle your vehicle in any given situation than it is to know all of the different rules of the road. We will be meeting here each week for your lessons, as I have been told that this is the place for safe simulations. This week, before we do anything else, I need to know where you are all starting from." Plus, she still needed to work out the finer details of Danger Shop programming. "I would like to go around and learn everyone's name, year of school, and how much experience you have behind the wheel. Oh, and if you have a dream car? Tell me about it."

[OCD is up!]

Jack looked around to see if anyone he knew was in the class. Maybe he'd have a driving buddy!

Alex had some driving experience but he didn't seen any harm from learning a little more thoroughly from a hot teacher.

Hearing she'd worked with Professor Gibbs, Griff wondered if he should take that as a good sign or bad of what was to come in this class.

Effy hadn't passed notes in years, but that was practically a challenge, and suddenly she rather felt the need to try.

She was annoying like that, yes.

Penelope had never passed notes and she wasn't about to try.

Eva wasn't passing notes or chattering, but that was just because this was the one class she felt she had to take really seriously. It wasn't because of her teacher, but more because the last time she had driven, she had almost crashed into her father's caddy and run her brother over. And that was just in the first five minutes of pulling out of the driveway.

Not worrying about the rules of the road? Good. Bordertown didn't really have any.

Alice had taken class last term with Special Agent Gibbs. How intriguing, to move from criminal justice to Driver's Ed. It suggested a story, didn't it?

"Hi! I'm Jack. Jack Burton, and I'll be a senior come fall here. And what I'm looking for in a ride is something with a lot of ponies under the hood that'll corner like it's on rails and mean enough to make people get out of my way," he said. Which would describe his dream Freightliner or a Camaro.

"I am Arthur Pendragon," said Arthur, who had absolutely no clue how he'd wound up in this class-- he was just grateful the teacher, so far, didn't appear to be insane as in his usual random classes. "A senior."

Pause.

"I've--" Never even been in a car before. "Encountered cars."

Internally, he winced.

"Hi! I'm um, Toshiko - Tosh - Sato and I'm going to be a um." Tosh took a minute to remember. "A Junior. I've been driving in England, but well, wrong side of the road. And um, I don't really have a dream car."

"Alex Karev, junior," he recited succinctly. He'd been introducing himself all week. "I've gone on a few joyrides here and there."

Which totally counted as experience. He'd been the one driving, after all.

"As for my dream car..." He trailed off thoughtfully. "Dodge Charger, maybe? Something muscle."

"Griff O'Conner," he said, trying to remember the last time he'd been in a car. "I believe I'm a junior and I've never driven a car, though I think I'd enjoy one with some serious speed capabilities."

"Effy Stonem, junior," she said, getting used to these little intros now. "I've driven my parents car a bit." She knew enough not to crash, and that was good enough for her. "Don't really have a dream one. I guess, something fast."

"Penelope Wilhern," she began. "I'll be a senior in the fall and I've never driven a car before." She twisted her lips, looked thoughtful. "I've never seen my parents drive a car either. And I don't have a dream car. I just don't know anything about them."

"Jo Harvelle, senior," Jo said. "I have a decent idea how to drive, but not much experience. My dream car would probably be some kind of pick-up, lots of storage space." For weapons, but Jo wasn't going to mention that.

"Eva Rodriguez and I'll be in my junior year this fall. I've driven once." The results of which she wasn't going to mention. "Dream car might be...maybe an old Cadillac convertible." Really, she just said that because that was the only car that she had ever been in that wasn't beat up and tiny as fuck.

"Dinah Lance, senior, and no real experience driving," Dinah said, because Helena liked her motorcycle when it was hers, and driving Barbara's van would be a pain in the neck. "And I think my dream car would be a Jaguar." She paused. "Or maybe a Delorean." Or, well, the Batmobile, but that was so not gonna happen any time soon.

They were all going to make her talk in class, weren't they? Tara barely glanced up from her notebook as she spoke.

"Hi, I'm Tara Maclay, sophomore" -- and, eep, the youngest one in class so far -- "and, um, I got my learner's permit a few months ago but I haven't b-been on the road all that much. I don't really have a dream car."

Francine was more than familiar with the phenomenon of ending up in a class she hadn't signed up for (and being too much of a goody-goody to try to get out of it) but this time she felt she ought to at least try to explain, since she might be taking a spot here that somebody else did try to get.

"Ma'am?" she said quietly and a little nervously, when only a few students had filed in. "Um, hi. I thought I should let you know I think I'm in this class by mistake."
